I have a 56 plate 2.0 TDI 140 Passat Estate. I bought this 6 months ago as a tow car for my caravan as have many of us I expect. Unfortunately on only my second towing occasion 2 weeks ago the clutch completely failed after I had towed my caravan a short distance from service back to storage. Admittedly it had got hot and a bit smelly whilst manoevreing. The clutch, slave cylinder, seals and fly wheel were all replaced under warranty. I thought this was problem solved but no. Today I towed my caravan for an uneventful hour to it's summer home and got it onto pitch without any hassle at all, not overworking the clutch (level, concrete pitch) and without any smells only to find that without any warning the clutch failed again. (fluid all over the road and pedal to the floor)
What is wrong with this car. I am towing well within the limits of the car and am an experienced driver who has never had to have clutches replaced in any vehicle that I have driven.
Is there a fault with the VW clutch whilst towing and if so can it be upgraded to cope? I am now waiting until Bank holiday is over to have car towed once more to my dealer and hope that they will be able to solve the problem.
