Hi,
Just become a member as getting v.frustrated.
Passat 130tdi (106K)
When I turn the wheel left or right and apply power, there is a grinding/knocking that seems to be coming from the wheels. It is not there if I coast in/out of gear. I have had it checked to see if anything obvious. No joy.
Anybody any thoughts please.
PS I have had the CV boots/joints changed recently as well.

Not sure. I have had a garage look at it and they couldn't find anything. Strange that it is with 'power on,' if I leave the car in neutral and go round the same bend, same speed, no noise. I don't know much about cars hence this thread.

drive shafts wont turn in neutral mate . which suggests to me its a cv joint thats failed. either inboard or outboard.

try doing a search for cv joints, thier is lots on them, have heard that thier is something about them that is difficult to line up internally, and if not correct, causes knocking.

Mine is the same. I had the cv gaitors changed when i got the car, I was told that it was because the joints had run dry after the gaiters split. The mechanic said it will take a little while for the new grease will take a little while to work it's way in to the joint.
I was also told to be prepared to pay out for at least on cv gaitor a year because they split regularly on all passat's and audi A4's

"drive shafts wont turn in neutral mate" That would be scary put it into neutral and the drive shafts and therefore the wheels STOP rotating. Regards Peter

they will spin freely from the gearbox , "wont be under load" so to speak . if that clears it up . :p.
its the load from being " driven" that puts pressure on the cv joints.

If your gaters split get them replaced as soon as you can , as cv joints with grit and water in them dont last to long after the boots have split, ive learnt from experiance.

Have you checked the upper control arms? They usually make sounds when turning if they are bad. Easiest way to check is to raise one side of the car and then grab the front tyre at 2 and 10 o'clock. Try pushing in each side of the wheel. If it moves then you have a bad UCA.
