hi, i have just had the timing belt replaced on my passat & i think the timing is out ?
I have looked on my autodata & it's not very clear on the timing marks ?
The garage that replaced the belt set the timing up via the number 1 mark on the flywheel at first & my car ran like a transit diesel, so i took the car back to the garage & told them the car is not right ? They then set up the timming on the 0 mark on the flywheel & set the cam with the correct locking plate, the car runs better, but im still not happy as the car sounds a bit tappy when first started & the engine is not as quite as it was before the belt change.
Is there anyway to strip the belt of & start from scratch to refit it properly, my pump is the 1 piece type, unsure of setting the pump & flywheel / cam timing marks, any help would be good.
thanks

Where abouts are you ? On these engines first you need to set the timing static (by the marks) then the pump needs setting with vag-com or similar ! If you are close to N.London, i could help you out ! Regards, Chris-07789912128.

Thanks for your reply, im located in Northumberland, the pump was marked before removing the belt , why does the pump need to be reset ?
thanks:confused:
As Adamss24 stated above, locking the pump with the pin only sets the timing approx in the correct timing 'window' so it will start ok.
The range of 'acceptable' timing is literally within a couple of mm rotation of either the whole injection pump body on early models, or pulley to pump relationship on the later type.
This has to be set with electronic equipment of some kind after a belt change.
This needs to be done because the range of acceptable static timing is very small.

I does sound like a Commencement Of Injection (COI) problem. What worries me is the marking the pump bit, it should be locked with a pin, if you mark up pulleys and plates for a timing belt, you don’t know what you are doing and/or don’t have the correct tools as the marks are provided if necessary and tools are used where there are no marks. Cars with the one piece pump sprocket are much easier to set up as you can move the pump with the engine running, the two piece idea is rubbish, it takes far longer.

The injection pump was locked with the correct tool, camshaft was locked with the correct tool also & the crank pulley was marked, as the problem that i have is to determine the correct postion on the flywheel, as i stated in my prior posting , WHICH IS THE CORRECT MARK ON THE FLYWHEEL 1 or 0 & WHERE DOES THE MARK ON THE FLYWHEEL HAVE TO LINE UP WITH ? as the does not seem to be a mark on the bell housing !
If your car is running the standard flywheel (not VR6 or anything) then this TDIClub document should be useful.
http://pics.tdiclub.com/pdf/a4timingbelt.pdf
It contains information on the different timing marks.
http://tdiclub.com/articles/ also has other belt change info for more TDI models.

You use the zero mark but the COI stetting has nothing to do with using the correct locking tools although obviously the basic timing has to be correct first.
