I have just got my first Passat estate 2.0 petrol late 2002.
I found water in the area around below the battery compartment, it seems like rain water.
1 Doe's any know how to remove it?
2 Could a drain hole be blocked?

Regards,

Yep a common problem,

There will be others just search on leak, Passat.

Drain plug below the battery is one cause, along with the joint on the intake vent for the A/C under the pollen filter, leaking.

I found the same on my 53 Passat, poked the blocked bung out from underneath rather than going through all the hassle of removing the battery .. seems to be reasonably water free now.

One other bit of advice, don't park facing uphill :o !!
In spite of having removed the bung above I was still getting a bit of damp related issues which I think are due to water sitting in the scuttle below the windscreen just above both wings. I used to park facing up hill and noticed a fair bit of water sitting in there - certainly enough to get up around the grommet for bonnet release and seals for pollen filter. Turned the car round to face downhill and quite a lot of water started dribbling out .... I'll see if it improves things.

had the same prob on my car, there are two holes below the battery which usually clog with road grime and leaves.i never noticed in my car until it was nearly too late, cos the water was up the servo and around the bottom of the ecu cover box.moisture was in the box but ive got away with it so watch out and check fairly often.cheers

Thanks for the help on the water issue,
I have managed to clear the water but have not managed to remove the plug below the battery due the the difficulty of access, don't want the hassel of removing the battery.
Where is the best access?

I managed to reach up under the scuttle from the right hand side of the engine bay (facing it) - it was a bit of a stretch and a squeeze but a darn site easier than taking the battery out. Might help to take off the engine cover?

i know its a hassle with the battery, but i would take it out and unblock both holes and clean all the grime out or youll be cleaning it out again, might be less grief if you do it while changing the pollen filter, its worth the hassle.

Refererence the Water issue below the battery.

I don't mind removing the battery and making a proper job of it but I don't want to have to do it every time, has anyone tried making a larger hole or making hole in other places?

I'm more concerned at getting the Radio/CD player going again with the code number.?

Thanks

There is a rubber deflector in the hole. I read somewhere that if you remove it there is a risk fumes can be drawn into the plenum and eventually into the car.

I have decided as part of the service and in-between services I will take the cover and battery out just to make sure. For the time spent is far better than any cost that could be incurred in the event of the comfort module failing.

I have also sealed the joint below the pollen filter and next time I have it all out I will be putting the flashing tape you use on house roofs/conservatories around the inside of the joint.

if i remember correctly the rubber grommet is sealed around the hole in the bulkhead.the grommet itself starts as ahole, but as it goes down through it turns into like a compressed, closed over pipe.i assume this is to stop fumes.once it all is cleaned out you shouldnt have to check it that often, just keep an eye to see if there is any water build up.if your still not sure you could try and put a piece of house hold hose pipe in the hole to keep it open.what effect this would have is anyones guess.good luck.as for the radio vw dealer would have the code for little money,if you dont have it already.

I have not managed to clear the drain hole under the battery and servo but only but removing the battery, it was well worth the effort because the hole were well blocked, sniped some of the rubber away to help the flow.

I now plan to apply the following solution, install to pieces of plastic mesh.
One to the right of the battery and one to the left of the ECM, this should help sive the water.
