Vehicle: Audi A4 Avant 1.8 Petrol engine code ADR P Reg (1997)

The viscous coupling fan is on constantly and temperature gauge is never showing above 70. Have re-newed 4 pin (blue) temperature sensor and checked thermostat which is OK.

On inspecting the VCF, the rotor blade is damaged and needs to be replaced anyway - is it a case of re-newing the fan and coupling or could something else be affecting the coupling's operation?

The car is stalling at idle - have replaced the crankcase breather hose that was damaged, used petrol and injector cleaning treatment and only discovered the damage to the fan whilst trying to resolve the stalling issue.

Apart from these problems the car is running well !! :biglaugh:

Any suggestions please ? I will take it to the main dealer for computer check this coming week - just trying to save money in getting the obvious sorted first.

i wouldn't expect the viscous coupled fan to make the engine run that cold, as the thermostat should automatically shut off flow to the radiator when it dips below 90, cutting it out of the equation.

provided the belts intact, then not alot else can really affect its operation other than the coupling. note that the fan will always rotate even with a working coupling but will rotate faster when it locks up.

how old is your themostat?

as for stalling at idle, the code read should provide some clues...

Thanks for that Darkhorse - will bite the bullet this week and throw myself on the mercy of the main dealer. Have bought a new thermostat so might as well change that too ! Talk about Trigger's Brush !
At least Wales won the rugby yesterday :beerchug:
