View Full Version : Help with non starting A4 2.8
Hi.
Car decided to not start this morning. :zx11:
It sounds as it could start but not getting there. Almost as if it was out of fuel.
Ran VAG-COM and got following:
2 Faults Found:
16514 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor B1 S1: Malfunction in Circuit
P0130 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16534 - Shareware Version. To Decode all DTCs
P0150 - 35-10 - Please Register/Activate - Intermittent
Readiness: N/A
I believe these are both O2 sensors on exaust manifolds (V6)
Could these be the real problem or just a fault caused by cranking engine?
Any other suggestions?
:1zhelp:
Thanks

Hi You have only the one fault code(lambda sensor) the other code is telling you need to register your VAG-COM to communicate with all units. However,a common fault with these vehicles is the fuel pump, but the first thing you have to check is the ignition (have you a spark at the plugs?),if so, can you hear the fuel pump when you turn the ignition on and off ?
The other fault is the opposite bank O2 sensor according to the codes found on web.
That is the funny thing, I can't hear the fuel pump when I put ignition on, but don't know if it is being told to run.
Sunday I started car just to pull it forward on drive by 5 mtrs, it started fine then.
Are the fuel pumps a known problem?
Thanks for your help

16514/P0130/000304 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor B1 S1: Malfunction in Circuit
Possible Causes
Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor Heating Bank 1 Sensor 1 faulty
Possible Solutions

16534 is shareware version to decode all DTDs The fuel pump or fuel pump relay are known to fail yes

I stand corrected you are right 16534 is Bank 2, Probe 1 Electrical fault in current circuit
Thanks for your help. ;)
I don't believe both sensors would fail at same time. It has to be something to do with fuel. Been searching internet for ways of testing those bits. Also it seems that fuel pump relay may feed heaters on o2 sensors.
Just need the tine to do it now. :o

The sensors are not the reason for it not starting,i will get back to you tomorrow and tell you how to test the pump
Thanks for your help, it is appreciated.

HI there,
hope you get sorted, everyone seems to know what there on about on this site.
Could someone please tell me though why it is that I find loss of power in my T reg A4 is not just common in the older car, but in the much newer Audis? Surely if you have a commonplace fault such as this in manufacture and also others [that include volume on radios ] Audi would ensure this would be sorted before introducing more cars to the public.
I dont understand the logic in it. If I scratch my head any longer I shall end up with no hair!:aargh4:

Hi Check fuse 28 this should have current for about 5-6 secs each time you turn the ignition on-off, and continuous current when engine is cranked,if so, then this indicates the fuel relay is ok.next step remove connector from fuel pump, and check with a voltmeter between contact 1 a green on yellow wire and contact 4 a brown wire using the same procedure as for testing the relay (you need assistance) if you have current and you can not hear the fuel pump running each time the ignition is turned on,then the pump is faulty.

Managed to get car started before i read this. Not sure how .
I removed all relays i could see, checked fuses, jiggled some cables.
One thing i found is a lone 5A fuse just under the relays bank, seemed to be a bit loose. (later with car running, i pulled it out and nothing happened.)
I was a bit puzzled with the fact that the fuse had no power when ignition is on, i thought it fed relay for pump permanently. (did not check first 6 seconds)
It seemed a bit rough when it did start. Will test it tomorrow and carry out your diagnostics sequence if required, and plug Vag-Com to check for any other faults.
Incidentally, is fuel pump under rear seat?
Thank you very much for your help. (do you work for Audi?)

The fuel pump is under the rear seat. The relay cuts out if there are no signals from the engine speed sensor.and yes i have been 47years in a VW-Audi work shop in Norway
Still going. Not sure what problem was. Removed relay again before put trim back and it seems fine. Ran Vag-Com, no faults.
Thanks for the help
