Could anyone help me with this?

Whenever I drive my car from cold, 2nd gear never engages smoothly until about 10 mins into the journey when the engines warmed up. It doesn't 'crunch' as such, it's hard to explain, it's like you can actually feel the gears moving. For a modern car built to a high standard (supposedly) I'm inclined to think this really shouldn't happen! A few people have said this could be down to the transmission fluid, others have said it's a common fault in a lot of VAG cars and others have said it's common among all diesel powered vehicles! I can't imagine it's the gearbox oil as the car is on a 55 plate and covered only 28k and I got it at 18k and it was doing this then. I don't believe it's common in all diesels as I frequently drive Honda CRV and Civic diesels and this never seems to be an issue. The one I'm more leaning towards is the 'common VAG gearbox fault' as I've owned both MK3 & MK4 Golfs previously, both with this same problem; although the MK3's second gear was crunchy all the time, even when the engine was at running temp! I can live with the few less than smooth gear changes, no problem, the thing I'm worried about is possible damage being caused to the transmission over time.

Once the engines warmish (+20 degrees C), the gearbox is probably the smoothest I've ever driven in any car, and I've driven hundreds of cars, from old to brand new off the factory floor!

If anyone could shed some light on this it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi there,

You haven't said what type of Golf you've got, but to be honest, regardless of type that doesn't sounds right!
I would get it into the ******** and ask for their opinion, and take it from there, I can't remember what the warranty time if for the gearbox but I would get them to have a look first.

On a personal note, how the hell have you managed to put up with that for 10,000 miles?!?!?! I would have got about 10 before I complained!!! :D

Cheers

Cheers for the reply Paul.

Sorry if I forgot to mention what model my car is; it's a 55 plate Golf GT TDI 140, bought it from a VW dealer on 1st March last year with one previous owner and full VWSH.

To be perfectly honest it's only a minor issue with regards to the gear change itself, it's more the possible long term damage I'm concerned about. Plus, it's only usually the first 1 or 2 changes of any journey. Also it's been way more noticable just recently with the cold mornings.

Hey there,

That's cool, if you bought it from the dealer then I would take it straight back.
It's definately not going to be doing it any good, it might not be doing any harm, but is definately not doing any good.
I would go in with the tact that it was doing it from the start but has got worse lately, otherwise they'll be asking why you didn't bring it straight back in!!

Cheers

Thanks for your help with this. I think you're right, I guess I'll just have to take it into the dealer. I was thinking of replacing the gearbox oil but I think I'll see what VW have to say first.

That's cool, any time, it's what we're all here for after all!!

Personally I find that taking it into the dealers right away will always find out your problem. Just because they've found out what's wrong with it doesn't mean they have to fix it ;)
It all depends how cheeky you are feeling to see what you can get out of them. Me personally, I have the brassest neck going and will make the most of it :D

Hope all turns out well mate, let me know how you get on!

Cheers
