View Full Version : Who's got the highest mileage Passat?

vwmark

My old 1995 TDi only had 160k when it was smashed into when parked. Replaced with a 2002 130PD Se estate with 115K so only a baby mileage. Just wondering who has the highest miles? My 1998 TDI Transporter has 227k and runs like a dream so looking forward to racking up a huge mileage.

Our 96 Passat Tdi estate has done 282k miles and so far so good-see my other post. She's been a damn good car, even though she gets a good hammering. We had an Escort diesel estate before, and by 160k it was falling to bits. The Passat is so much better put together. We'll definitely get another one when this one dies.

282K! That's pretty amazing! My 2000 1.8T has done 172K with no major problems, still runs as smoothly as it did when I bought it. Mind you, I did buy it at 168K..

What do you use you passat for to get to 280K? Impressive.

A mate a few years ago had a 1.3 Golf - B reg. When we first met it had done 100k - I was used to low mileage cars and thought it would blow up - it went on to do 250K before he px'ed it. He only ever serviced it once a year. This got me into VW's.

Blimey - I think we should start another sub-thread to see who's got the least miles for the oldest Passat. Mine's an August '97 (R) 1.8T with just 89k on the clock. I bought it in Feb 2002 with just 47k on it. I only do about 8-9k a year though. Got to say it's been a low hassle car so far. Still in mint condition too.

Good to see that Passat's are capable of coping with higher mileages. I'm looking to buy a 1997-2000 model & not having owned a car in my life, was surprised to find that even 8 year old cars quite often have 120,000+ miles on them.

There's a 1998 / S-plate SE TDI 90bhp on 86,000 miles that I'm interested in, looks like there could be plenty of life left in it, especially when I only expect to cover 7,000 miles per year (will still keep my bikes).

With regards to low mileage, mines a 97 1.8T thats done 83k, a mate has a 51 plate on 85k. Its rare to find older ones on less than 100k I think. I saw two for sale a while back, one on 165k and one on 180k.

My 2001 has just done 55k. I hope I still have it in another 200k! When I was 18 (seem's like only yesterday...) I had a MK1 golf 1.1 petrol. I bought it at 132k, sold it at 168k. The only thing that went wrong with the engine was the rubber seals on the carb and fuel pump seal failing. Apart from that it was just stuff you'd expect on a car that age. Shocks and bearings. Once they were changed it was good as new. I actually had a front suspension spring snap while parking, pretty rare methinks. I did a lot of work on that car to make it nice, and sold it for twice what I paid for it. I even learnt plenty about mechanics in the bargain. If it hasn't been crashed, I'd be willing to bet money that it's still going 7 years after I sold it. VW all the way!

We typically try to drive the wheels off of our vehicles. The Passat is at about 55K miles, it is an '03 which we bought in early '04 (after the Mercury Mystique had a stroke).

Yes, we are in the US (Alabama). I just wish the cars went forever. The Mercury had around 180K miles when we traded it, we also have a 96 Ford Ranger pickup with about 104K miles. I would just as soon hang on to the Ford truck awhile longer since used trucks around here are either ridiculously expensive or beaten to death.
So maybe cars go on forever here because we are such cheapskates.

Bought my '94 Passat 1.9 TDi estate in 2003 with 129k on the clock for about £2500. I was cheesed off when I had to spend £400 straight away to fix a brake problem (should have taken it straight back to the dealer and shoved his 12-month "MOT" where the sun doesn't shine), but it ran really well after that, with minimal service bills each year.
Now at 208k, but things have started to go wrong on it. Perhaps that argument with a bus last year has disturbed the status quo! I thought I ought to be getting rid of it, but after reading this thread I'm not so sure.
There seem to be so few diesel estates out there, and the newer models seem to have more things to go wrong on them.

Although until recently the engine and body have been fine, it's the little things that have been frustrating. The internal plastic mouldings (including door handles) seem prone to break or perish, and the electrics are not too good. The airbag warning light was always off (one lead to the warning bulb had been accidentally/deliberately broken when I checked why, now it's always on. . .); central locking has always been erratic; some window motors and gearing failed. This is all stuff that my normal garage reckons can't be fixed, and I don't want to pay main VW dealer prices, so I've had to put up with them. The air blower has gradually become less efficient, and now needs to be on the max setting to make a difference. Maybe the filter's just full of leaves!
Now the dashboard meters have started playing up over the last few weeks. No idea how fast I'm going or how much fuel I've got!

176000 miles no major problems, the last 100,000 (4 years) has cost £14K including fuel, insurance, tax, servicing and tyres which is a lot cheaper than buying a new car. Little bit of smoke occasionally but once its has got rid of this the rest of the journey is smoke free.

today i have fitted a cambelt to a 2001 passat 1.9 tdi with 250,000 miles on the clock. This is my mates car and the fourth belt i have fitted on it.This engine has never missed a beat and still has the original turbo and air mass.I disconnected the egr and adapted the fuel 100,000 miles ago.The air con compressor pulley fell off last week but as my mate says, who needs air con in winter. This car never suprises me and never fails,he loves it and it just makes me laugh.

today i have fitted a cambelt to a 2001 passat 1.9 tdi . . .
For comparison purposes, I'd love to know the cost of this.

Mine (as above) is on 130,000 miles now. Last recorded cambelt change was about 60K-ish. There seems to be some contradiction between those who say it should be done at 60K intervals and those saying 80K intervals.

I have decided to get it done immediately as I have just been hearing of premature cam-belt failures at 50,000 (albeit on Volvos) and it would seem foolish to even remotely risk a valve mash-up for the sake of a job that needs to be done sooner or later anyway.

I am guessing you are from the USA/Canada or Australia? The reason I say it is you tend to see a lot of high mileage cars in these "big" countries. I reckon it has to do with steady long driving distances. In the UK we go a couple of feet and stop a lot :p

It has been great to read the above. I have just bought a 93k Passat Tdi PD100 estate (4 yrs old ex-fleet with perfect SH) and hope to run it for at least the next five years up to around 150k. The above comments indicate 200k should be achievable without any real problem. (Hopefully the intermittent cutting out of the radio system will rectify itself - no turning the radio up to correct this problem!)

I have run a Citroen ZX TD upto 150k and it is still ok, but the flimsy bits and pieces are showing their age. Fingers crossed for the Passat then.

1998 with only 86K. Got to be a good buy.Should last you 10 years or more.
Go for it

i notice all the cars with high milage are diesiel....most of them should do at least 300,000 miles or more if well looked after!!! i give my respect to the guy with the 1.3 golf!!

my mate had a 1.4 golf 96 he got it in 01 with only about 76,000 on it.he used to service it every 5,000 miles but about 6 months ago his girlfriend wrote it off with 211,000 on th clock!!!! never a days bother.....never burnt a drop of oil!!

Now upto 134k miles on my 1.8T 2001 Passat. No major problems - should I be worried yet? Never had a car over 100k so I get worried . Still runs smooth and never fails to start :touch wood:
