hey all, i have a 2000 A3 1.8T and the engine temperature gage only works intermittantly. does anybody know what could be the cause of the problem? Is it something i should be worried about? cheers:1zhelp:

Could be as simple as a faulty sender or a bad connection in the engine bay at the sender unit.
Maybe one of our more experienced members could make a better suggestion.
Good luck with it.

Usual answer is renew coolant temp sensor which sends signal to both guage and ecu.
Let us know how you get on

A very common problem on some VAG's is a "green" 4 pin temp switch, this may be your problem.

I have a 2002 A4 with a tempremental guage. Sometimes its quarter the way up, somtimes at 50, somtimes in the correct position of 90 deg c. Is it safe to detach the sensor plug and have a look. Just curiouse about it upsetting the ECU.

Many Thanks!

i usually get me temp gage coming on if the coolant level is low. sound obvious but worth checking if you have a leak somewhere

Is it safe just to unplug the sender whilst the car is off? Dont want to upset the ECU as I have bu**er all knowledge of cars. :(
