Fuelling and EGR changes with vag-com

Hi,

How does the increased fuelling and decreased EGR with vag-com affect a car that's been re-mapped? Will it help or hinder it? Stupid question: What's EGR?!

cant help with the technical bit, but found this in the audi glossary


Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is the controlled diversion of some of the combustion gases back into the combustion chamber. This lowers the combustion temperature and reduces oxides of nitrogen (NOx) in the engine. This is a very effective process, because oxides of nitrogen tend to rise disproportionately with increased combustion temperatures. There are two methods of exhaust gas recirculation: internally through overlap of valve opening times and externally with recirculating valves and manifolds.

It depends on your current injected quantity with the map but it could possibly make it smoke. The map should have been setup to your car so no real need to adjust the vag-com offset. After all this is not a permenant change.

EGR is the exhaust gas recirculation valve, used to recirculate the "fumes as such" back into the inlet. It's all down to emissions and does not really effect performance too much.

Thanks for the replies. The car will smoke a bit when you put the foot down (A4 B6 1.9TDI) but not like a smokescreen! You'd expect some smoke being a diesel. Maybe best to leave it, as you say Paul, the map will have taken care of it. MOT passed on exhaust emissions post-map so I guess there's no issue there.
