Hi everyone, im ordering my GT this week i have 2 choices:
1- GT 170 bhp manual gearbox.
2- GT 140 bhp dsg gearbox.
What would you guys recommend from experience?
On test drives the 140 bhp with dsg felt quicker?
Hi m8 i ordered mine (GT Sport 2.0 TDI 140ps with highline, lux pac 1 and armrest) 3 wks ago..I got the car through DealDrivers for £17480 OTR 2 grand under list price :biglaugh:
I went 4 the 140 cos its quite rapid as standard + i'll get a remap once i've done enough miles...Anyway point is Dealdrivers cut out the dealer and get you a UK car FULL warrenty and delivered to yr door.Gonna get mine early april cant wait.....:beerchug:

cheers m8,
did u test drive the 170bhp when you were looking at buying yours ,
for some reason the 140bhp with dsg seemed quicker perhaps it was cos the dsg finds the sweespot of the powerband and with the 170bhp manual you have to work at it?!!
Yeh i test drove the 170 DSG and tbh i did'nt notice much difference so i went 4 the 140 at £1000 cheaper...

The 140 could actually be the far better deal, a 140 has a slightly better resale value than a 170, it also costs less to insure than a 170 & it also costs less to tax than a 170, £115pa vs the 170's £140pa.
Besides with all of the little yellow roadside piggy banks & Gestapo vans what's the point? You're just making it easier for them to add points to your licence & pounds to their coffers! :aargh4:

tax aint a problem or resale value or insurance or mpg , its a company car!
i drove a hire 140bhp gt with dsg and if felt quicker but also a little frenetic the way the gearbox behaved , where is optimum power in the rev range as this is gona be my first diesel - how do you drive them properly to go fast!!! ?????

I would go for the 170 gt manual.I test drove a load of cars eg(Golf GTi,GT 140 DSG and manual and GT170 DSG and manual)and ended up buying the 170 manual. The reason being, the 170 is much quicker and smoother even than the GTi i drove, and i picked the manual 170 because you have more control of the car when you want to accelerate.I found the DSG always changeing gears at the wrong times.(Thats my opinion anyway.Hope this helps).:aargh4::confused:

The 170 every time.
You could regret it if you have the choice now.
I had to make the same decision - a 140 DSG or the 170.
Never looked back.
Just out of interest - you can get the A3 170 Sportback Sport for £19372. Which is £390 more than the 170 Golf GT TDi based on what cars target price.
or £19878 for the 140 A3 with the S-Tronic Gearbox, £20604 for the 170 with S-Tronic.
These are all 5 door Golf's:
The Golf 140 DSG should be: £17228
The Golf 170 should be: £17026
The Golf 170 DSG should be: £18194
You should be able to get them for that direct from VW. Audi WILL match the prices.
All prices quoted from What Car and Drive The Deal .co.uk
With the Audi's you also get 3 years breakdown and not 1 Year like the golf.

I'd say it depends on your driving. Given that its a company car lets ignore cost/tax/mpg differences.
If its mainly stop start town stuff or traffic jams, the DSG might be the better bet, and a 140 will be just as good.
If its motorway / A road stuff with overtaking then I'd prefer a manual and a 170. The 170 definitely felt perkier than the 140 to me when I test drove them.

cheers guys ,
your advice is really helpfull , i reckon monday morning ill be going for the 3 door 170bhp with arm rest and free leather interior.
Seeing as youve got a 170 bhp what is the best way to get the performance out the engine - do you rev upto 4000 then shift ?
prolfe
25-02-2008, 09:28 AM
1st gear and second gear you have to be gentle or the traction control will spoil your fun. turn it off and the wheels will just spin.
Change up at 4000 or there abouts. Just after that you start to loose pull.
3rd, 4th and 5th are my fav's, 6th gear REALLY gets you into trouble.

nice one! im looking forward to 3rd gear!!
i would of thought 6th gear was more of a cruiser - is it rapido?

got the phone call today mines on order - a 3 door gt sport 170 bhp manual in tornado red with arm rest and full leather interior ( 8 - 12 week wait) , all i need to know now is how many miles is the running in period??
Wazza_G
25-02-2008, 09:31 PM
I can't remember exactly but I think it's around about 1-1.5k mark, but I'd hardly say that a top speed of 80 is slow! :biglaugh:
duroo72
25-02-2008, 09:34 PM
yeah 80 mph is fine , is there maximum rev limit during that running in period?
jdjd1234
25-02-2008, 11:16 PM
Remap it and then it pulls right to the redline, Or atleast mine does anyway, And 6th gear isn't even worth doing unless your pulling 80mph + ! You get better economy in 5th at 70mpg Something like 46mpg whereas 6th is about 37-38mpg
duroo72
25-02-2008, 11:22 PM
ok cheers for that but u missed the point a little!!
i was asking how far you can rev the 170 bhp gt whilst running it in???
Wazza_G
25-02-2008, 11:50 PM
I rev mine up to around 3000rpm and it's done no harm, but mine's been sitting around for 18 days while I've been off sick with chicken pox, so I've got some catching up to do, mind you it's got a trip to Taunton & Exmoor in about 18 days time for a weekend away, so that should blast any cobwebs away!
duroo72
25-02-2008, 11:57 PM
did the dealer recommend how far you could rev it during running in?
jdjd1234
26-02-2008, 03:14 PM
Mine told me to rev mine tho the range, Doesn't have to be hard acceleration just gently, It should actually become quicker after say 10,000 miles

It will feel like forever.
I was told 8-12 weeks and it took 8 exactly.
I drove to and from wales over the last couple of days and have done just shy of 400 miles with a quarter of a tank left. Which is quite good.
one thing you will need to keep an eye on is the Oil consumption. Always keep a spare litre in the boot so that you can top up when needed. i check mine every two weeks.
It can use 1 litre every 7000 miles and at £14 a litre it ain't cheap.
You can ONLY use 507.00 in your car because of the DPF. The handbook says that 'only in exceptional circumstances can another type be used, and even then only a maximum of 0.5l'.

Have a look at Opie Oils either on this forum/supporting companies or their website.
Halfords
VW themselves were competitive for oil.
Obviously buying it in bulk is better but at £45 it's a bit of a layout of cash.
you should be given 1 litre in a faux leather pouch to keep you going. As soon as this has been used get another in there.
Do you have to sort out tyres yourself? Does you r company reimburse you, does it have to go to a certain place?
My old company car was all paid for by the company but i had to source the tyres pay for them and then get the money back from them. The best way I found of doing this was using e-tyres, they come to me wherever i am to fit them and they are much cheaper than quickfit and the likes.

Is it ok to use halfords own brand?
Its all paid for by the company , i dont think there is a nominated place for tyres most guys goto kwik fit, im lucky ive got company credit and fuel cards
so any charges will go on these:p
And whats all this about the 170 bhp's having more like 180-190 bhp:D

Halfords don't make an oil that complies to the VW 507.00 standard so it will have to be a branded one like Castrol etc
Use e-tyres then as they have an excellent service and you can choose exactly the tyres you want knowing that they are cheap.
I have just changed to Potenza's and they're great.
I read that Superchips have yet to test one that wasn't less than 180 as standard and Revo tested one recently that was 192 as standard.
Obviously rolling roads can be inaccurate so the figures aren't set in stone.

You might like the look of leather, but it has problems...
1/ In ice cold weather it's like sitting on a ice cube, unless you have the heated seats which is lovely... :approve:
2/ In hot weather it's sweaty and horrible and if you jump in and sit down in shorts it'll burn you & your ar$e off...
3/ Unless you look after it carefully it can go all saggy or crack & generally look :moon:
4/ If it gets damaged it's a lot more expensive to repair/replace than the standard fabric/valour covering.

Well all I'm going to say is.
Don't come back here whinging that you're hot, sweaty & uncomfortable in the summer or you've got a burn mark on your legs.
It's horribly cold in the icy winter mornings or that the leather has gone saggy, cracked looks horrible etc.
Because all you'll get back is.... TOLD YOU SO!
Leather upholstery is a nuisance, it's harder to maintain and it adds very little to help the depreciation, in fact it often detracts from the value.

You could have chosen cloth, it's a no cost option, in fact most dealers will be able to configure the car on a computer, print it off and order it exactly how you want it.
BTW if you want to try using some stuff called Renapur (http://www.renapur.com/balsam.htm), I use it on my motorbike leathers and gloves, it cleans and softens beautifully.

Thanks for the heads up on the leather but seriously its a lease car and we had no choice over the leather we asked them 3 times (the lease company) to take it off. The End!
well it appears here that each to their own. Some like leather, some don't, and some don't get a choice.
There are advantages and disadvantages with everything.
I have a leather sofa in our lounge, Its lovely and cool in the summer and god horrid in the winter, but it looks good, Yes its not as good a condition as it was new, but nothing lasts forever.
Seat covers were invented for a reason, so if the seats get hot in the summer or too cold in the winter, put a cover on them for protection from the extreme temperatures. I would of thought though, 95% of the year there would be no issues.

Amazing - my GT170 and Petrol Card arrives tommorow it was meant to be May so im very happy!
Can someone please remind me:
1, Running in mileage & max revs during that period.
2, Recomended Oil and best place to buy it.
And any other "Helpful" advice.
Cheers.
( every company car i had in the past i reved hard from day one and my colleagues with the same cars noted how mine felt quicker! , is the Gt170 really that quick?)

Yep it is quick. I had a 2.8V6 passat before and it feels much faster.
Running in - has a section on this in owners manual. Up 10 1000Km, no more than 3/4 top speed (should be enough in 6th :D), do not use full throttle, avoid high engine speeds, do not tow a trailer. From 1000 to 1500Km, speeds can be gradually increased up to max rpm.
Oil - the 170 with DPF needs VW 507 00 spec oil e.g. Castrol Edge 5W-30

Thanks for the helpful replys guys , im over the moon with it and it looks great in tornado red , i havent gone flat out yet but boy is it quick it has a really satisfying/addictive lump of power , awesome overtaking and midrange power the bottom end is not to bad either - its just a bloody shame we live in this excuse for a country with all its speed cameras.
Now for the bad news today was my first fill up with diesel after filling the tank i made way down the road playing with all the gadgets checking mpg and tank range - all was well in my little world, i cant remember how much time had passed but when i glanced at the fuel gauge it was reading empty and the range display was just 3 lines , i pulled over removed the fuel cap and refitted it then restarted the engine and voila the fuel gauge shot up and normality was resumed until i looked a little later and it was reading empty - Gutted!!
I will check the forums for this problem but has anyone else had this fault?
Overall im still Happy!!!

I haven't had the fuel gauge fault, but I had my Highline display going all wonky not long after I got the Golf.
Just took it back into the dealers and they replaced the cluster under warranty. Take some pictures of it doing it though, as it'll no doubt do nothing when it's in the dealers. But don't do what I did and take the picture at some silly speed!!!!! :Blush2:
Sounds like a good motor you've got though, good choice :beerchug:

well i went to my local vw dealers and guess what the bloody fuel gauge was working i should have taken your advice and snapped some pics the dealer tested it with their laptop and the result was a faulty loom or sensor so much for vw quality its brand new!! the bad thing is they cant get me a loan car until the 19th may, just after leaving the dealer the gauge went down again !!!! seeing as ive still got that new car bliss feeling im keeping my sense of humour about it all.

not bad for a brand new golf eh?!!
ive had it for one week now and have covered approx 700 miles , first tank gave me 480 miles , im loving the in gear acceleration but not the weather its looking filthy already!

507.00 only, check it every other time you fill up, that way it will never be on empty, which is not good.
You'll probably use a litre every 7-9k
Costco are the cheapest at the moment at £15 for 3 litres otherwise it's halfords at £15 for 1 Litre.
