If you have an oil pressure warning on this engine it will not be the switch (which is on the oil filter housing) it will be a blocked oil pump pick up. Please do not drive the car any more or you will destroy the engine, this is terrible problem on the 1.8T engine and often results in a destroyed engine and turbo. It is so bad that used engines and turbo's are fetching crazy money.
i have recently taken the sump out and cleaned the strainer pump and uptake this has sorted a big problem although after a short drive 15-20mins the oil light appears again, if i stop turn off the engine and restart the light goes off, but will only come back a short time later. can anyone tell me what the problem might be. i know its not easy when u cant see the problem in front of you but any advice would be apreciated. also i am using 5w30 full syntethic engine oil and herd it my not be the right oil for a 20 valve turbo... can you help. tnx, gary!!!

You have an oil pressure problem, it may have blocked the sump again (the fresh oil can cause debris to drain into the sump) or the engine may have been damaged due to the loss of pressure. It is an extremely common problem with the 1.8T, especially in the Passat and Audi installations, why I don’t know. I am beginning to get the impression it may be something to do with the design of the sump itself. The 1.8T in the transverse installation is no where near as prone to this problem as it is in the longitudinal installation. The first thing you must do is have a proper oil pressure test carried out and 5w/30 is correct in this engine. The oil pressure on a hot engine should be a minimum of 1.3 bar at 2000 rpm and 3.5 to 4.5 bar at 3500 rpm.
cheers mate i,ll give it a go and get back to you...

The cure, provided no damage to the engine is to stick a new oil pump in and keep the oil changed regularily .The sump is 1 litre smaller on the A4/Passat so the oil tends to cook as it has less to disipate the heat. There is a larger oil filter available to increase thae capacity of the oil system by a bit.
I have learnt this the hard way, mine was cleaned out before i fitted the engine, and seemed ok at revs but low at lower revs. I bought a pump to fit, and the day before i had planned to do it i ran the crank out and lost pressure etc etc.

Thank you for your reply, i changed the oil pump and still no different. I now have a noisy rattly top end, does this mean the engine is damaged and would you recommend i change the head or complete engine?

Stop driving it now, the oil pump strainer in the sump is blocked with sludge and debris, the sump will have to come off to enable you to clean the strainer and the sump plus it is a good idea to remove the cam cover to allow the head to be scrubbed out down to the sump. Also after this you will need to flush the engine with flushing oil and even then they can still block up again, I had to do one I did five times before it would stop blocking the strainer. To prevent this in the future, only use the highest quality oil and change it and the filter every 6 thousand miles. This problem has destroyed more 1.8T engines and turbo’s than I would like to guess at.
