Hi all,
I'm new to forums and posting so please be patient and excuse any gaffes.
My wife has a A4 97 1.6SE and I have recently had the following problem.
Wife left radio on over weekend and battery went flat, charged batt and tried to start but fired and died -- immo light on dash flashing. Keys are not remote type. Tried spares, same result
I have looked over various forums and have done the following.
Left ign on for 3/4hr to see if it would re-read key code - no luck.
Cleaned contacts to reader coil and immo box -no luck.
Purchased new adaptor lead from dealer and fitted (reader ring to immo box)-- no luck.
Went to local scrappy and found A4 same year ignition barrel with reader and immo box. Connected new reader to lead and tried again - no luck.
Tried new reader with new immo box - no luck.
If i disconnect immo box then reconnect with ign on, light on dash goes out try to start then dies.
Do you think I need to re sync keys to immo or have i got bigger probs.
Would getting a fault code reader help me?? I do still have all 3 keys, inc the one with codes on.
Sorry to go on but any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions --- with my limited exp I have run out of ideas.

Hi I think you are making more problems for yourself, with what you have done.(Tried new reader with new immo box - no luck.) I suggest you replace the old immo-box.Have you diagnostic equipement?

Hi Kenney, thanks for replying. I dont have any diagnostic equipment but was looking into a lead to link to laptop + shareware software. Any recommendations?
When i fit new immo box will I need to code it with diagnostic equipment?
Thanks for advice.

Hi It will have to be adapted to the ECU and all your keys must be recoded,(Audi workshop job).I was thinking in the lines,of when the battery went flat,i imagine there is a fault code on both the ECU and the immobilizer control unit.If you put the old immo-unit back and clear the fault codes there is a possibility,i could do the job.

Hi Kenney - is there a way to clear the codes without diagnostic equip, or will i need to get the lead for laptop or similar code reader to do the job?
Thanks again

You could try taking advantage of Eshrules Enterprises special offer. He is a member on this forum. Just click on search and put in "VAG-COM group buy" and you should find it. Good luck.

Cable arrived (talktomycar.co.uk), downloaded software 409.1 shareware / drivers etc. Sorted com ports, programme recognised cable ---- all in the garden was rosy.
Saved settings, checked immo box got some codes then programme stopped working and never worked again even after uninstall and full re install of drivers and programme.
Laptop with Vista (but tried with XP sp2 compatibility also 2000/ 98 /95). Will post on VAGCOM section.
Anyhow codes returned from VAGCOM on the one time it worked are as follows
VAG-COM Version: Release 409.1-S
Control Module Part Number: 4A0 953 234 F
Component and/or Version: IMMO AUZ9Z0V3144856 D77
Software Coding: 00000
Work Shop Code: WSC 00000
2 Faults Found:
01176 - Key
07-10 - Signal too Low - Intermittent
01177 - Shareware Version. To Decode all DTCs
65-10 - Please Register/Activate - Intermittent
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Fault code 01176 =Possible Causes
Low voltage in key-battery
Bad connections between immo reader coil and immo control module
Possible Solutions
Replace key-battery
If more than one key acts like this, check / clean the connector between immo reader coil and immo control module, the contacts tend to oxidize
There is also another known issue with the wiring between reader coil and immo module, they are known to be too short so there is a 'longer' wiring (8D0-972-275) available What 01177 seems to suggest is that you must register to be able to use the system you may need a license or something,

Hi Kenney - thanks for reply
The keys I have are not remote locking type, they are manual "turn in the door lock" type, do they still need a battery? Still got all 3 keys inc 1 with plastic fob with keycode scratch panel on, none seem to work.
I have tried the following - have cleaned all contacts (immo ring, immo box and ecu) with contact cleaner. Replaced immo ring harness with Audi OEM 8D0-972-275.
Think my next route may be to get auto locksmith to recode keys - what do you think?? i was hoping I could do this with VAGCOM + shareware.
Thanks GWA497

Hi It seems the equipment you have bought does not allow you to enter and erase faults on control units you have to probably pay some kind of license fee.Iam not 100% sure but i still THINK if the fault code can be delated it will cure the problem, taking into consideration it all started when your battery discharged.I have seen it several times here on the forum were people say their keys have lost there coding after changing the cars battery,If i had a penny for every battery i have had out and in i would be a very rich man,and i have never had any problem with key coding

Hi
Finally got VAGCOM working with Vista (posted on VAGCOM section), checked fault codes and cleared all - immo light went out on dash, tried starting but light started flashing again.
Engine codes say immo blocked engine start, immo codes basically say dont recognise key, so will try to rematch keys tomorrow and let you know how i get on.
Thanks again for all your input.

Finally sorted problem, a neighbour with a VAG1551 thingy came over and reckoned that when battery replaced the immo box had lost its settings with regard to the keys, his box wouldn't recode for some reason.
So my newly acquired lead and VAGCOM setup with purchased license was used. I followed the procedure for swapping immo box on Ross tech wiki which basically removes old settings and then re-reads existing keys, and hey presto success,:D, just got to put every thing back together now after i stripped column and all to get to reader ring, doh!!
With the right bit of kit it was a 2 minute job. Just got to cancel airbag light now.
Thanks to all for your input --- very much appreciated.
