Sorry if this has been repeated elsewhere, but is there a definitive answer to the question as to whether there is wiring for rear speakers in place in a 1.9TDi S?

Also I have been told by one audio fitter that the RCD 300 will not run rear speakers... and then suggested a new apline! True or false?

Thanks

I can't say for sure whether the wiring's in place (I suspect it it as that would reduce manufacturing costs IMHO), but the RCD300 will run rear speakers - I know this as my 2.0 TDI SE has the RCD300 with rear speakers and that works rather nicely.

RE the wiring, some say yes some say no. I guess I'll just have to pull the door panels off and find out.

Thanks for the info on the RCD300. The audio bloke said that the fact that there was no fader setting in the menu meant that it would not run rear speakers. I just thought if there was no rear speakers connected that the head unit would disable the fader feature.

That's odd as my RCD300 does have that setting - it can fade Front/Rear and Left/Right.

I wonder if as you've not got the rear speakers, the stereo can detect that - opinions anyone? Or you may not have the wiring at all.....

I'm just speculating here as I don't honestly know the answer so don't quote me on this.

When you connect either a CD changer or an ipod adaptor to the back of the RCD300 then a new menu will appear when you press the CD button which wasn't there before you plugged in the connector.

It may very well be as JTW suggests and the RCD300 will only bring up the fader option when rear speakers are connected. Which incidently the RCD300 is definitely capable of running as I also have them fitted.

Cheers

This is indeed the case with the Xcarlink adapter (I've got one) :biglaugh:

That's what I am hoping. My nephew is a car audio fitter and assures me it will run rear speakers. I've a feeling the other audio bloke i was speaking to was trying to sell me more than i needed.

About that Xcarlink adaptor. DOes it charge your iPod. I used a normal cigarette charger with my last ipod and thought the battery life deteriorated quite quickly. I read some forums that suggest that constantly charging your ipod may damage the battery. I was thinking of getting a connects2 ipod adaptor that provides audio out only through a mini jack. I don't want control of the ipod - a 16gb touch by the way.

What do you think?

Yep - Sounds like y'man was trying to flog you something you don't need - I don't know about wiring though, that would need to be verified by someone else....

The xCarlink does indeed provide charge, but it usually shows the battery as charged, not sure if that means it stops charging the battery though. I prefer the audio feed to come from the iPod jack instead of the earphone socket though as it's not dependant upon your volume setting. It also reduces greatly the number of wires you've got in the car - my ipod lives in the cupholder thing and the cable that goes in there is very discreet :D

Hi,

I fitted rear door speakers to my 1.9 TDS, there was no wiring loom in place and I had to modify the pre-drilled positioning holes (good old dremel!)

When fitted the Radio did come up with a fade option like magic, sounds much better with 8. :D

Spiceman,
I'm going to attempt this job, any tips? Which way did you run the wires? And how did you connect them to the back of the RCD300?

Thanks
Paul

Hi,

I had to modify some small male electrical connectors, it was a bit interesting!

I followed the wires for the central locking where possible, It was hard through the rubber sleeve between the door and pillar but it was worth it.
It would be easier to rivet the speaks to the door, and you will need shallow/slime speakers; but what an improvement! :D

Why does the stereo not store the time of the cd when you turn the ignition off, everytime I get in the car and start it up, the cd starts right from the beginning, even if I was on track 7 when i switched ignition off. Bloody annoying!!!

That sounds like a faulty unit. My CD's start at the same position they where at when I last stopped the car.

Hi All,

i can definatley confirm that the wiring is not in place.

The RCD 300 will display the fade option once it detects speakers in place.

When i did my golf i actually soldered the wires directly to the rear he RCD300 bit fiddly but worked fine.

when i bought the speakers i was told the same, oh it wont run them you need this head unit as well for £400 - yeah right did he think i came down the clyde on a cream cracker!!!!!!!

Getting he cables round was a pain in the back side though.

Good luck
