Does anyone have good info on how to remove the rear lights. I have removed the boot trim and can release the outer part of the light cluster (2 sprung clips visible from the inside ) but can find no way to release the inner part next to the boot lid rubber trim.
There is a very slim reflector hidden when the boot is shut - does this hide some sort of retainer ???? if it does it doesn't seem to want to unclip.
The lights need to come out to access screws to remove bumper to fit tow bar.
Any help or ideas would be much appreciated.

open yor tailgate and you will se that there is a plastic cover covering inner side of taillights. this plastic must be poped off and ander it you will finde retainer. undo it and voila...

Many thanks for your reply, I managed to find a good description on a towbar manufacturers website and it was just as you described and I managed to do it about 2/3 weeks ago.

Unclipping the panels on the tail gate only gives access to tailgate lights. How do you get at the main rear cluster which conceals the bumper fixing screws?

Does anybody now what the wirin is for a trailer on a Passat estate? I have a B6 in bits at the moment, I've bolted the bar on, and I'm having problems finding out which wire does what in the rear lights.

Thanks for the advice Martin I've just wired it all up and everything works, except the sidelights, I've got a chattering relay, so either the relay's bad, I need one of those smart-relays that are cluttering up eBay these days, or I've done something wrong.
Do you know if a smart relay is needed (I'm guessing that the sidelight is just a pulsed feed of the brake light, which is why the relay is clicking in and out).
Cheers

Not sure what you mean. You cannot wire a towbar to this car without a bypass relay. NEVER connect directly to the wireing on a can-bus vehicle.

I'm using a 7-way bypass relay, and I've wired it up correctly (checked against your guidance, and I've pinged it out using a test lamp). The indicators and brake lights work fine, but the sidelights don't.
I think I read somewhere that some CAN-bus cars will pulse the voltage to some lamps and this will cause the lights to not function.
When I put the sidelights on, there is a distinct chattering noise from the bypass relay, as if a relay was being switched very rapidly, which seems to support the theory of pulsed voltage.
If I put a proper 12-volt signal into the side light input into the relay, the sidelights do light OK, so I think the relay is fine.
Do you know if the Passat will need anything other than a bog-standard 7-way bypass relay?
cheers

Hi Martin,
Thanks for the link - I've just flicked through, but I'll take a proper look at it tomorrow and let you know how I get on.
Many thanks

Hi again Martin - reading page two of the scan, it suggests that if the rear lights have a common feed for both brake and side (which mine do) then only connect the red wire, not the brown and black. I connected all!
I'll take the back end interior apart again this afternoon and swap those wires around to see if that sorts it - it's at times like these that I'm glad I bought the estate, getting to the wiring in the boot of a saloon is (literally) a pain in the neck for those of us over 6 feet tall :)
Thanks again

The only ones I have seen have 4 separate feeds for the rear lights. One for each tail light and one for each brake light. The foglight and reverse light share a common feed. You are using both 12 pin connectors I assume, brown on the left and black on the right.

This is a really useful thread since I am about to conduct a DIY towbar install!
I am at the stage of removing the light cluster on an estate.
Does anyone have any tips on how the light cluster can be prized off without damaging the paintwork?
Is there a specific tool required?
