Hi there, new on here.

Got an Audi 80 ,94 model 2 litre petrol
Anyway went out testerday-everything fine drove to the brother-in-law's, left about 3 hours later and the car sounded really odd.
On acceeleration there's a slight rattlecoming from the engine
Went off when not accelerating, car then started to get abit louder and to become quite sluggish. As we got near home (no mare than 20 mins of driving from her brother's) the car was still rattling under acceleration andsounding rough when ticking over. The rattle was there under acceleration when in gear and out of gear.
As we pulled into our road to park up, it conked out whilst parking.
Starting didn't sound as crisp as usual either and car runs lumpy.
Any thoughts/ideas as to what the problem could be?
I was thinking maybe a blocked fuel filter ,or maybe a HT lead, but not really sure.
What would make it go from running sweeetly to so bad?

Any help appreciated as I'd like to get it sorted today if not too serious!!

Jim.

how do I check that timing is ok?

Just had a quick look and spark plugs pretty dirty, gave them a bit of a clean.
Car starts and will tick over of sorts.
I had the air filter off and when I was getting the car started, the engine was chuffing through the carb...there were jets of stuff coming back through top of carb anyway...
Bit od f squealing coming from one of the belts- sounds more like the alternator belt thaough than timing belt.
Could a new set of plugs do the trick..car wouldn't all of a sudden get clogged up though would it?
Also any idea where the fuel filter is??

Aaah just had the man from the RAC round - got hardly any compression in cylinders 1 and 2.....could be head gasket- could be worse. Car runs on 2 cylinders..
How difficult is a head gasket to do?
