Hi,

I have just taken delivery of a 1.9 TDI s Passat B6 (company car). It does not come with rear speakers although the grills are there. This is very annoying as I have to have the kids music full blast in the front so they can hear it and I can't take anymore of Girls Aloud!!

Does anyone know if the wiring/ connections are in place so I could just buy the speakers and put them in? If so will I be able to get the fader option on the RDS300 head unit?

Thanks in advance,

Martin.

I too have just taken delivery of a 2.0 S DSG estate and have discovered the same thing! Kids are going to go nuts when they find out I'm not going to turn up the radio/cd and listen to high school musical blasting out the front speakers! There must be an easy remedy for this cheapskate oversight, wifes mazda 6 has rear door speakers and was a cheaper car.Or have we both missed something in the set up menu??

Thanks Mike.

It has been the case for many years that all models use the same loom (its far cheaper than manufacturing designation specific looms), so unless things have changed all your required wiring should be place.

This was a bit of bummer after having 10 speakers in my Alhambra. Saying that when the kids do travel these days they bring their Ipods etc so we can all listen to what we want. I have got used to the 4 front speakers, I find them OK for my needs. I think there is an option on the extras for rear speakers with the Ipod prep kit, not sure whether the doors are pre-wired though & I think the door cards have to be removed. I think buying the Ipods/MP3's maybe a cheaper option!!

Since posting my reply to this thread(in the early hours during a night shift!!) I have thought about the ipod/mp3 player route.Children are getting a bit older now and all like different types of music so it will be easier and cheaper and quieter for the 'olds' in the front, for them all to have their own players whilst we listen to 'mumble FM' Not Arf pop pickers!!!!

Just wondering if anyone found out if the wires are behind the grills and if so ho easy it is to remove the door panel to fit the speakers?

I asked two different people in the dealer and was given two different answers.

Person 1 - Yes the wires are in.

Person 2 - No the wires are not in.

I think the only way to be certain is to remove the door cards.

Any idea on how to remove the door cards without breaking anything?

Hi All,

From my experience the cabling is not in place, i had a 54 plate golf TDI s this had no rear speakers, upon taking out the radio the pins for rear speakers had no cables to them, door cards also had no cables to them. I had to run some in, i then soldered them directly on to the pins on te rear the radio, fade will then come live within the sound menu.

There is a quick way to check, pop out the stereo, in the passat it comes out in two mins, pull off the facia round the radio fingers under the bottom and pull, undo the four t20's (i think) and slide out, if there are cables to the rear speaker pins then yes they are there if not, now is the time to fit some.

Door cards in the passat, dont know how easy they come off, its a pain in the backside in the golf.

I hope this helps

Hi,

I can confirm that the wires are not there.

As for the door card you need a lever like tool available from the usual suspects, then when you pull at the edges of the door you can see the clips which you need to remove. You think that they are going to break but it does require some force!

Getting the wiring through the rubber boot on the door pillar is something else, but its all worth it.

Oh, and theres the silly littly clip that holds the window winder on, pull this sideways with a flat screwdriver.

I've also found the quality of the speakers in my 07 sport 170 to be poor in comparison to my old Alfa 147, I noticed this as soon as I picked the car up

I've wondered about all this before too!

I had a 06 Focus Titanium before the Passat, and the Sony Soundsystem was superb - really balanced, smooth and good bass handling.

I have a 55 Passat SE now, love the car, bit was additionally disappointed with the sound, i got talking while waiting to a couple of people in a VW showroom one day while waiting for the car.

VW say it's the head unit that is often not up to spec (i have the RCD300 now), other people say it's the speakers.

I have the Ipod attachment, and have tinkered with the Ipod's EQ settings to improve the sound, it's better with a flatter setting and Bass/Treble controlled on the unit.

Mine already has rear speakers, but they can't handle much bass, bit annoying!

I would like to improve the sound, anyone asked a VW or other dealer what solutions are out there ?

In some ways i don't mind, because i'm glad they invested more into the quality/ other features of the car, than some fancy ICE unit ! :D

Rear door speakers 165mm. Front doors 200mm according to VW literature.
