Hi Tony,
If you look on the parkers web site that tells you all the information you need. I would definetly go for the 1.8T as you get an extra 20BHP and not alot of difference in econmony. I had a 1998 1.8T saloon and it flew but i think the new shape ones are a little slower. I also recenrtly test drove a 2 litre estate and it was gutless compared even taking into account of the extra weight. If you can stretch yourselve go for a diesel - especailly the 130BHP. You get so much midrange power you don't need to rev the engine to overtake is just there already plus much better economy. My 1.8T saloon averaged 28.8MPG and my TDI 130 Estate averages 38. My travel to work is only 10 miles with a couple of painful traffic lights so if you do more miles then expect much better economy that stated here.
I recon you should always try to get the best spec possible so go for the SE if poss. The S you just get Climate above the entry level although I've never seen the entry level they are so rare. SE you can add alloys, lumber support (important if you do lots of miles) and I think you get a drivers arm rest too. Or you could go for a sport which adds flashy trim inside, Leather steering wheel, sporty seets, nicer alloys and sits slightly lower on the road.
Cheers
