My 200 1.8t 20v sport passat estate makes a horrible noise on startup for a few seconds,it sounds almost like a pump going too fast with nothing in it,it also makes a nasty fast loud ticking noise at tick over but as soon as you get the revs up a bit it goes??the noise appears to be coming from the topend but is not half engine speed but quite fast.any ideas?
Cheers Ray

Hi, Check Oil pressure readings cold and Hot. Could poss. be worn Oil pump? What mileage has vehicle done? Manual or Auto? Has oil and filter been changed recently? Is noise louder from top of cam cover towards bulkhead?

Hi golfer7, its a auto with 135k on the clock, the noise appears to come from the raised bit of the cam cover over the cam chain,we have only done 100ish miles since getting it,when i`m back at home i`ll put a orig` oil filter and some new oil in it.
i think there may be low oil pressure at tickover-how hard is a oil pump change?
What oil should i use?
Cheers ray

Hi Ray, I'd advise Castrol Magnatec semi-synthetic oil.To replace the oil pump it's a real work up! Big job i.e. dropping subframe to get the sump off. Genuine oil pump I think is about £100 ish plus gaskets/sealer.
My advice is change oil & filter and get oil pressure checked.
V.W. will have fiquires what pressure you should have at idle & at revs when vehicle hot...
Good luck Golfer7

A few possibilities come to mind, Ray:
1) cam chain tensioner and/or cam seals, particularly should the noise return on hot idle;
2) secondary air pump, assuming you have those in the U.K. The combination valve at the back of the cylinder head activates the pump for about 20 seconds following a cold start.

Best, John E.

Yes, it sounds like I have the same issue.
I hear a noise coming from around the engine (camshaft adjuster unit) when I start my 1.8T

However when I press the gas the engine noise disappears!!
Oil pressure is fine (no warning lights), the noise only appears when I start the car otherwise everything good. Secondary air pump is good, no problems.

Should I replace camshaft adjuster unit ($$$) or wot else should I check?
Wot was the solution Ray ?

give me a chance-no solution as yet-we have a baby on the way and a house that needs finishing before i am allowed to play(sorry fix) the vw.
i may give up and send it to a garage.

Sorted-it told me to service now,so i did, also passed its mot, first car we have had that went through first time.
the noise is now gone i think the oil was knackered and the fresh stuff has fixed it.

now how do i sort out the bloody air blower/air con?

Cheers Ray

glad it wasnt the cca-phew!
