If it is an auto, the boxes fail and this usually results in the car being scrapped as repairs are unbelievably expensive, at least four times what you paid for it. The other common failure is timing chain tensioner breakage which happens around 100K and is also a very major job, about £1K+ if the engine survives. If it starts oiling up number 6 plug, get rid of it. These above reasons are why they go for half what a TDI would fetch, that and 18mpg around town.

I can't see it having had the cam tensioners, chains, rails etc as that is a huge gearbox out job and costs £400 just in parts.

When people spend a lot of money on a car, they often lose faith in them. The trouble is I have seen this many times and often see the car with the new owner and I have had instances where they have said things like "never given me a moments trouble" and I know they gave the previous owner hell.
