Wayneo,
Follow the above link. I did the timing belt myself. Look at the state she was in! All good now though, it was a full days work. Do it in a garage, its too cold to do it on your driveway at the moment.
Anyway, you need a locking tool set, I found one on e-bay for £9.99. Could not have done it without it.

Oh I tell you what, Wayne. PM me your postal address etc and i'll lend you the locking kit if you want it. I'll also send you the pictures/diagrams of the belt and how to replace etc. I'm based in Gatley, Cheshire. I'll do all this if you agree to pay the postage which will be about £5. It makes sense seen as I won't need it again for a while. And don't forget to send the tool back!

If you are doing a V6, you probably need the cam clamp bar as well as the locking kit.
certainly do on the V6 petrol.
the straight 4 & 5 cylinder engines are definatly easier.
Also the 'service position' trick for the front bumper saves hours !

I did the cam belt myself on my v6 2.5tdi. I assume yours is the V6 also. You must use the cam locking tools and slacken off the cam pulleys. I used tipex and paid dearly as 20K later the tensioner bolt snapped because there was too much tension on the tensioner side of the pulley arrangement. Luckily no damage to the engine. There are 4 belts, so its best to change all of them. i was going to replace the water pump but the Audi parts man said he had never sold one, so they must last a long time. I took the whle front end off and put it on the ground with only the air con pipes connected. It give you more room if are the cautious type. otherwise just slide the front end forward.
BEST OF LUCK. I took about 12 hours from start to finish.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for getting a timing belt kit? The cheapest decent quality one I can (now there's a contradiction!!)
Many thanks

You may be able to get the cam locking kit etc on e-bay. I bought one for mine from a seller who had V6 ones at the time. However I still went to Audi to buy the belt, tensioners and water pump. I would imagine you could get a decent one from eurocarparts, if you don't want to pay Audi a visit.

I have never been impressed with patern parts from europarts.
always found that parts from http://www.gsfcarparts.com/ are better quality, and fit.
had to return a 2 different power steering pumps to europarts as they were badly machined and did not fit, then purchased part from GSF, and it was a mirror image of the original ZF unit. Fitted perfectly and has been perfect ever since.

Audi Stockport charged me £80 for the full belt kit including belt, pulleys and tensioner, but they highly reccommend changing the water pump at the same time for another £35 with the old one in exchange. The locking kit was extra from e-bay.

Lonky, my mate had a problem with eurocarparts the other week, so I fully understand. I agree though GSF are very good.

Follow the link provided by Paul b earlier in the thread and you will understand what the "service position" discussion is about.

I am not the only one who reckons this can't be done on some cars. I am sure mine won't let me do it! It's a difficult thing to work on i'll give it that, but it's worth it in the end.
Thanks for your suggestions Andy
