Your thoughts please............

My 1999 A6 2.5 TDi died about 6 weeks ago, the short story is something happened with the timing and the insides are wrecked! It had a new timing kit put on some 2K miles prior to this. I took it back to the garage (non main dealer) who give a 12 month warranty on the work, for them to check what caused the problem.

They claim it's nothing to do with the timing kit but a cam pulley on the 'other' side of the engine that broke causing the damage! ie not their responsibility.

Now......is this feasible or are they taking the pi$$? Seems a little fishy to me, I'm taking the car to a trusted 3rd party on friday for them to have a look. Just wanted to fish for any advice or info from the wealth of knowledge on this forum.

Many thanks

Hi Rob
From my experience of completing the timing belt change on my 1.9 TDI A6, I bought a genuine timing belt kit from Audi which came with all pulleys, belts and the tensioner. And, on their advice I bought the water pump too. This left no pullies other than the camshaft pulley and the crankshaft pulley to change, which don't really wear out anyway. The fact that yours was changed by a non-main dealer means I would look at that dealer in terms of responsibility. From what you have described the dealer may not have changed all of the pullies that should have been changed or the car has been put back together wrong. It would be fairly ease to put an A6 back together wrong, if you look in one of my previous threads when I showed pictures. It was called 'My A6 Timing belt experience' I think. Anyhow, I think the dealer in question should be made to pay for this whole experience. I wish you luck!

Sounds like if the job had been properly in the first place then all the timing components should have been changed,in your case it sounds like it hasnt,do oyu have a break down of the receipt to show what parts were changed and was it a genuine kit that was fitted or just the belt,in the last few years I have owned 3 cars and as a matter of course allways have the timing belt done for peace of mind mare than anything, and every time the garages have recomended having all the pulleys that come into contact with the belt changed, its sounds like its had a half done job done to it when it was changed so for me it would be down to them all the way

cheers matt
