I don't want to get ripped off so i would ask if anybody could help me on this forum i have allso been told it could be as simple as reprograming the gearbox as it could be out of sync and need reprograming.?? Please help. my car as only done 60.000 miles and been serviced every service interfal i think the gearbox should last longer then that.??

The 01J (an FYU is a Constantly Variable Transmission, CVT) is a evil nightmare of a box, they drive me potty. Just search for CVT on here and you will see what the problem is. Clutch pack failure is a huge problem and the only course of action I would recommend is a full Audi exchange box as it isn't just the clutch pack that fails, ECU’s and valve bodies go as well. If I get someone come in with a problem on one of these, I will only fit a genuine unit as it comes with a two year parts and labour warranty from Audi. The box is £3066.07 inc. VAT from Audi plus fitting, bolts, fluid and in-line filter.

Hi,

I've copied some recent links on this topic. I've just had a new gear box fitted.... Audi paid 80% of the repair cost. May be worth having a word with Audi UK / Germany / local dealer before making your final decision. One of the questions will be if you had the gearbox oil changed at 40k, ie has it been maintained in line with audi recommendations

Best of luck

hi ,dont know if i am asking this question in correct plce, just bought a audi a4 avant 83,000mileswith full service history including gearbox oil change(tiptronic gearbox) light now flashing on dash indicating prob ,so got it diagnosed(not at dealership, but audi specialist) and told ecu, just out of warranty in july so ,i rang audi ,they told me i would have to pay for diagnosis at audi dealership and then they would negotiate with the dealership on a goodwill gesture for me ,so i paid £105 to have that done ,same result came back ,ecu £1168 in total inc labour and vat, after audi at doncaster got in touch with audi they told me they were prepared to pay 10%apparantly amounting to £88.00 less than it cost me to get diagnosed what i already knew ,seems i cant do anything about it ,but aftertalking to someone in audi management i have been told that if i pay first audi can then make a policy claim on this part upto six years old,is this true ?or do i just have to get the job done and pay up.

And when it is done it is likely it won't cure it. I did a few ECU's in the early days of this problem (they are quite easy to do) before I gave up and now I won't touch them, all I do is recommend an exchange Audi box and that is it. It may seem drastic but you have to look at it from my perspective. If the fault code comes up as a faulty ECU and I fit a new ECU and it doesn’t cure it, the customer is quite rightly not going to want to pay and will make me pull the ECU and fit a new box or even worse, take the car away. Either way that leaves me stuck with a £688.62 ECU (Audi won’t take them back) and a good few hours of lost labour. I have known people have the clutch pack, ECU and valve body/oil pump done as three separate jobs when it would cost half that to have a genuine box fitted in the first place. The CVT is turning into a huge problem.

Personally i'd never have a CVT box if I was forced to go for an auto Audi, they just seem far too much hassle for what they're worth! With such a plentiful supply of owners suffering the same problem with this gearbox it would make some sense for a database of cases Audi have agreed to contribute towards the repair costs to be catalogued for future members suffering the same problems to use as ammunition to request Audi to cough up again!

i totally agree, best is when you speak to audi theymake out as if there is no problem with the gearbox!

Hi,

The Glove got to you before I did - I would suggest reading those!!!!!

Though my car is NOW fantastic to drive - there is a bit niggling away in my brain expecting something else to go wrong.

I was lucky - Audi and the seller paid most of my £2500 costs.

But I still contemplate trading it in for something completely different!
