Notchy Gearbox From Cold

Over recent months and especially from the start of winter that the gearbox on my 2002 A6 Tdi is very notchy from cold. I was thinking of changing the oil but I can't see a drain off point. There is a 17mm allen cap plug for checking level but I can't really see how to drain off other than using a vacuum method. Any ideas ?

is it an auto or manual ?

For model of gearbox look at the sticker in the rear wheel well.

The gearbox is a 5 speed manual code - FHN

is the fluid level correct?

on some audi boxes the correct level is critical.

Later models need the special tamper proof plug key VAG tool number 3357 which you can buy from any VAG dealer.
