Hi, i'm new to this forum and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice?
My 53 plate Passat (1.9 TDI 90) was broken into on Saturday night , the 'nasty person' made a right mess of the drivers side lock, got in then had a scrabble about and was either disturbed or didn't find what he/she was looking for (my guess a sat nav) and left empty handed (guess 101 70's hits wasn't to their taste)
My wife works for a transport company and has taken the car into their garage today who have ordered a new lock (£55 with the exterior trim) I appreciate that i would have to manually open the car with the new key but will the central locking function still work with the existing key?

Hope you can help this ageing newbie!!! :1zhelp:

Cheers :beerchug:

Have you considered a lock blanking kit - I think they are on eBay at a decent price....

I delocked mine as they all have a flaw with the locks which I wont say. After my dad has his passat done in.

Yeah should do, but you wont be able to program any new keys as you havent a lock.

Hi all

Also had my Passat broken into just before Xmas in Maidenhead, along with my other car as well.
As you say Faisal the police think that these gangs target certain areas for a while. Good news in this case is that the culprits were caught just up the road breaking into another car and have been linked with a few other robberies in the area!

Also going to fit a lock blanking kit which the local VW dealer sells for just a few pounds although you have to spray the plastic cover if you want it to match the car.

Haven't tried to remove the old locks yet so any guidance would be much appreciated.

Cheers

My 96 B4 Variant was broken into on Christmas day.. The thief punched a hole into the metal below the door handle to gain entry and then removed the CD player. I had to replace the entire door and the door handle. Everything is working. I guess I was lucky. The damage was to the tune of €2000 including painting the door. I did all the parts swap to the new(breaker yard) door myself and saved a bundle.

I use the Bentley manual and it says "Lock calibration present on the vehicle can be maintained by repositioning or attaching lock plates" . It looks like a job for a locksmith to me after viewing the diagram. Who but a locksmith or the "*******" would have extra lock plates around? The central locking system should work unless the thief knackered your door actuator or severly bent the metal connecting rod to the actuator.

Sorry to hear about your Christmas present (not), but you raise an interesting point erico.

If the thief punches a hole below the handle then blanking it off is a waste of time

Mind you the blanking mod looks ever so cool.

Hi,
There is a product that prevents thieves from breaking into VWs by using a screwdriver to make a hole beneath the door handle. I had seen it used on cars in the US. It is an armored door plate made for VW,Audi and Porsche cars. Here is the URL to the company's website (http://www.landspeedusa.com/products/vw_security.htm). I will search and see if there is a European distributor.

As long as my brother-in-law lives in Utrecht where he does:( we will always face the risk of having junkies break into our car when we can't part directly in front of his home. Thats life.

regards,
Eric

edit: I emailed Landspeed to get location of their European distributors.

That particular design flaw has been around ever since VW /Audi put water-cooled sedans and the like on the market.

Yep, and anyone able to use the internet would be able to work out the "flaw" without anything we have said here :(
