And its not even mine - basically joined up to get a bit of info on the cars, common knowledge/issues/etc etc. My better half has just bought an audi a3 1.6 (old shape though) but I'm very impressed with it - a really well put together and nice to drive motor!

Yeah it could be something along those lines from what I see! Hopefully we wont have any trouble with the car fingers crossed but I take it these are weak points of the model?

AKL code engines suffer terrible idle problems and the 1.6 engines use an evolution o the old 020 box, called the 02K (typically a DUU code on the A3), and they are very prone to throwing the rivets out of the differential which doesn’t do the box much good.

No that doesnt sound too good! - are there any early warning signs of the box problem/things that I can check or any preventative measures etc?

I just read a thread saying the throttle bodies get gunked up - is this basically what causes the idle issue or is it something more serious?

Seems a lot of in depth info wanted real quick but if things are known weak spots id like to try and prevent them if I can!

This is the quickest time ive ever seen on a forum between registering and getting useful info!

The throttle body becoming clogged up is common and cleaning it is a well known procedure in the trade but the AKL requires an extra step of learnt value deletion when it is reset after cleaning. Unfortunately there are no early warning signs for the box except occasionally you get what feels like a misfire but is actually the rivets rolling around in the box and getting chewed up before being spat out.
