Hello
Was wondering if anyone knew what the best course of action was for a rear door on passat estate 02 being locked shut.
Problem is the central locking does not pop up the door pin and both interior and exterior handles wont open the door. Interior handle does raise the pin though.
Was working when i bought the car and all the forums and links i have found talk about a fix but with the door open. I dont really want to start drilling holes in the interior panel.
Any ideas guys

apart from take the door card off mate, id say take it to the dealer, i bet they have seen this issue on the cars before and most prob have a fast fix for this.

well I have bought a Haynes Manual and wil see if i can do it myself. Car goes in for service this weekend so will ask them if they have a quick fix rather than pay £80 a hour to get it sorted by them. So annoying.
Thanks

Couple of months ago, I had the same problem with the passenger door. Cost me £450 to get it fixed at an independent garage, VW quoted me that much in labour alone. The problem was that they had to rip the side pannel out as the door could not be opened.
Blow me, just a month later, the same thing has happened to one of the rear doors. At this rate it's going to cost me £1800 just to get into the car!
The car is a Passat estate, 2002. Is there any point inb going back to VW as clearly there is a fault with this. I should not be racking up these sort of bills on a 4 year old car.
Cheers

Jesus that is alot for a door fix. Did they actually tell you what the problem was in the first place?
Funny this morning was really cold and when i got into my car i noticed that the door had actually unlocked itself...but i didnt get out to have a look at it and i am now kicking myself because it is not opening anymore.
I am still waiting on my manual to see if i am able to do it myself as the back door is not so important.
But if you want to write a letter to VW i will back you up as our cars seem very similiar and both got the same fault. Dont know if they will take any notice.

Hi Phil,
I've spent most of the morning on the phone to VW, but as the car is out of warranty etc etc etc. However, after a lot of bagering, they have agreed to pay 25% of the repair costs if done via a VW garage.
To be honest, I'm not sure it's going to be any cheaper. I'm going to talk to a consumer lawyer in the morning about it as I don't consider 4 years a reasonable time for this to brak down. I'll let you know what they say.
Cheers
Philip
PS - worth remembering that a jammed door is an MOT failure!

Hi Phil i have just joined today
I have had this problem with my front passenger door on my 2002 passat, it is deadlocked shut!! and has all the symtoms you have had!!:beerchug:
I have removed the door card and stripped the inner door down to just a door and a lock and i just cant seem to do anything to get it open, i have read about this on a rear door of a mk4 golf which turnd out to be the door lock mechanism situated on the window winder as one part (convenient) aparently a new one plugged in will solve this problem and the door will unlock, but there must be a way of getting it open without that !?!?! Surley?!?!:1zhelp:
I dont want to splash out on a new winder door control unit to find this is not the problem,
Any info on how i can get the door open would be greatly appreciated
Thanks:biglaugh:

I had the same problem on my rear passengar door and I stripped the door card and panel off but couldn't find a fault? One day while washing it I tried the door on the off chance it would open and to my suprise it did and it has worked fine ever since.

Hi Guy's
Well I did fix the problem with my rear door by removing the innner door card with great difficult as the door was locked closed. Strip out everything that you can including the window winding mechanism. I bought a haynes manual to do this as you have to prop the glass up once this is remove so it does not fall down. I can post image from manual if you need them.
Once you can see the door lock mechanism try pushing the levers with a screw driver to see if you can get it to operate. If not then the only way to remove the lock if the circuit board inside has a fault is to smash the lock open with a screw driver and try and operate the pin from inside the lock. Bit brutal but did the trick, spoke to 2 dealer mechanic's and this how they do it.
Once the door is open you can remove the lock from the outside as it has 2 spline bolts holding it in place.( need to buy this from a tool shop as non standard).
When you have refitted the new door lock mechanism which costs about 80 quid connect it electrically and make sure it looks like it works before you close the door, as I did this but closed the door and could not open it again for some reason. I then took it to a dealer as I was well and truly fed up with it by now and they just said I had fitted the door handle cable incorrectly and put it all back together for 150 quid labour.
Things to look out for.
Be careful with window glass mechaism.
Try not to ruin the plastic grommets that hold the lock mechanism in as you need to reuse them.
When buying new door lock mech it might be a different colour, try and match it the one you already have.
http://www.taligentx.com/passat/maintenance/doorlockmechanism/ useful website if you want to try and fix the door lock if the door opens obviously.
If you need a more detailed description email me philster666@gmail.com
Hope this helps
