'97 R reg Polo 1.4CL Thermostat housing

Hello,
My son's Polo recently blew a head gasket whilst he was on holiday. This was repaired by local workshop in Cornwall. When he colected the car they advised the thermostat was missing and they had not replaced it as the housing lugs were broken and they had no time to obtain the parts!
I now have the housing /thermostat/O ring assy complete and plan to do swap when he is home this weekend.
Any advice or tips would be apreciated.

Pls. find below process to replace coolant sensor, it's quite easy

The coolant temperature sensor is located below the distributor in a black plastic water housing. Make sure the engine is cold and release the coolant expansion tank cap. Locate the sensor in the housing and squeeze the two metal ears of the plug retaining clip and pull the plug off. Release the sensor by sliding out the metal or plastic retaining clip. Pull out the sender and retrieve the "O" ring from inside the hole. Reassembly is the reverse of removal as Haynes would say

Just common sense: let the engine cool down before removing any hoses. Take care when removing the termostat housing, lubricate the gasket/o-ring seal with a bit of grease and lightly oil the bolts(get new ones from dealer if posible) before refitting. Fill with coolant to the top mark and bled acordingly. Keep the heating on full blow to bled air from heater matrix. Watch for normal operation of thermostat (hot top/bottom rad hoses) and check for leaks. Do not overtorque the bolts/jubilee clips. Hope this helps.
