View Full Version : Intermittently stalling at junctions

Leased a new Golf in July 2024, and straight away I had an issue with stalling at a junction. I went to pull away and there was nothing on the accelerator. Turned engine on and off, and it started with no issue and off I went. This has happened probably about 30 times, I have done just under 5K miles. It has happened whilst my husband was driving too, so not my driving skills or lack of! It went to the dealers in August, no fault found, back again in November and a third time today at the request of VW Customer Service. Each time no fault found, which I am not surprised at as it is intermittent and they can only road test for a maximum of 20 minutes. This is dangerous as it is happening at junctions. VW Customer Service and the dealer wish me to 'demonstrate' it, but it is intermittent and I can't replicate it on demand. May I add that I always disable the start/stop function for every journey, which the technician at the dealership advised me to do in August, in case this was causing the issue, but it makes no difference.
Has anyone else experienced this, and if so what was the cause please? I will be back in touch with VW CS tomorrow, but wish to also understand my legal position or what I can do next?

Does it do this with the stop/start turned off?

Does it do this with the stop/start turned off?
Hi
Yes, after it went into the dealership to be investigated the first time, when the car was around 5 weeks old, the technician suggested I try turning the start/stop off at the start of every journey, and it still does it. I always without fail disable the start/stop. Happened again today (sod's law it didn't happen yesterday when it was with the dealership again), but this time I was approaching the roundabout, slowed down but didn't need to stop, went over my line and then nothing on the revs. How I haven't been rear-ended yet is a miracle!
I was supposed to get a follow up call from VW Customer Service today, but am yet to receive it!

When it cuts out, does it automatically restart?

Morning
I have to turn the engine off and restart and it always starts again no problem at all.

This sounds like a software problem, nothing new with a Golf 8.

Many thanks, it is so frustrating as both the retailer and customer services say that as I can't prove the fault there is nothing they can do! They wish me to photo/video the fault, but I keep telling them it happens at junctions with cars behind me, I can't sit there safely and start to record it, I will be shunted in the rear!! Especially as I can easily restart the engine and move off...

I have a 2020 Golf Style 150 and had lots of what I
thought was software trouble until I found out the battery voltage is critical, low voltage can trigger what looks like a fault.

It also stalls quite often and I came to the conclusion that there is very little torque at low revs so if you're a bit slow on the accelerator and a bit quick on the clutch it stalls. My car restarts after a stall, the stop/start is usually on. Another point is that when the battery voltage is low the stop/start system doesn't work so if it won't come on and stays deactivated whatever, it could be the battery. I replaced my battery and all the system "faults" went away; it hasn't stopped the stalling but I put that down to me. The car is pretty quick off the mark with plenty revs but sluggish at low revs. Are you used to driving a diesel with plenty low rev oomph?

PS it took my VW dealer ages to find the battery problem and I was charged for the time!

Modern VW's are extremely sensitive to voltage problems, if it drops below 12v, they lose the plot.

The information I found suggests that if the battery voltage drops below 12.6 volts, most of the assist systems start showing faults and one indication of this problem is the stop/start system won't activate.

I don't think battery voltage has anything to do with the stalling problem, I think it's more to do with the accelerator pedal and throttle system. I have noticed my car doesn't like being driven at very light accelerator pedal pressure - I sometimes get the "kangaroo" effect and I guess it's on the point of stalling.

To be honest I will be glad when I retire not having to work on old Golf 8’s, they are going to be a PITA.

I'm thinking of joining a friend by moving to Toyota but they've also had their fair share of problems.

Toyota are not what they were, all western car brands have had to cheapen their designs to try and compete with China doing what Japan did in the 60’s and 70’s.
