Hi all, writing this one to hopefully save someone a bit of time.
My auto-dimming stopped working last week. Had some time to look into this today and spent a good chunk of time investigating to no avail.
The green light on the rear view mirror was on, no codes or similar showing. So, I tried to eliminate all possibilities. Tested using the torch, checked the fuses, etc, etc. Everything was perfectly normal!
I was already at the stage where I started looking for parts on eBay.
Got carried away by contemplating the replacement with a newer "frameless" mirror - and searching around, I stumbled on a hilarious post that resolved my original problem.
One of my dome lights died. And somehow, I did not notice that the switch was "on" (obviously, without the light). And the auto-dimming does not work when the light(s) are turned on... #facepalm (https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=facepalm)
11 years later, you can still learn something about your car... [emoji23]
