Hi!

Last juny/July I had new bilstein b4's fitted all around. The rears had new top mounts, bump stops, and the plastic protection sleeves. Also had all new bolts for the shock and top mounts.

A few months later the car began knocking its you know what's off on both sides and it sounds high up in the boot area.

I've had it on the ramps at a local garage. He said the rear arm bushes are a bit cruddy but no play in anything to cause any knocking. He said he doesn't want to throw parts at it when he can't pin point the exact cause.

I've done some research online and some people on other car forums have had identical issues with b4 shock absorbers.

The knocking is quite noticeable on a typical road in the UK which aren't the flattest and the noise is from both sides.

Anyone else had issues with the b4's?

Could also be ARB drop links.

I did think this but I have just had 2 new ones put on for a quick option to rule them out.

I'm going to throw some money at new shocks. I'll try some sachs ones.

Half tempted to do them myself but do you need to remove the spring as well.

Can you tell me if there should be a washer between the hub and the shock absorber? Or is tge washer just on the bolt head side?

Cheers

The spring stays in there if you support the arm, yes they have the serrated washer WHT 000 724. The risky part of the job on a Passat is getting the lower bolt in as the hub thread is angled and aluminum. You must use a new bolt N 910 662 01. Ohh and the torque spec is f***in tight.

Sort of, I made my own 21mm torque adapter

All sorted. I've taken the bilstein b4's off and replaced with sachs and the noise has gone. Seems like the b4's have an issue as I've read about on other forums.

I read some much about people opting for these as a decent replacement but after maybe 2k miles covered they began knocking! I thought it can't be the shocks, they're new! But being both sides and them being the parts I had replaced.....they had to be the issue and they were! In the bin they've gone!
