View Full Version : Question Front wheel scraping and rumbling

Yesterday I was out driving a few miles (as in 10 km per mile ;) ). The first half of the trip went fine without any complications, but when I drove home, as soon as I put the car in motion I heard a scraping sound from the left front wheel. Probably a stone caught in the brake disc I thought. The hole trip back home the wheel was rumbling and I felt a slight shivering in the steering wheel (at 80 km/h). When I used the brakes it got much worse, very loud rotating scraping sound and heavy shaking/rumble, almost as if the wheel was about to come off. I could also hear the scraping sound when I drove the car slowly. This lasted all the way back to my garage.

So, the first thing I did today was jacking up the car, checked the wheel for horizontal and vertical play, none. I took the wheel off and inspected everything. I could not find anything wrong. Pads, discs and everything else were just fine. Nothing.

I'm stumped. Suggestions?

Has the noise gone?

I was just about to write an update on my post when I saw your reply. Last night I called a friend of mine, and he could report that he had experienced this three times with his VW Sharan. My initial thougth was right, it was just a stone trapped in the brake somewhere.

I put the wheel back on today and took it for a spin. Nothing. Just silence. So, lesson learned. Never experienced this before. Thanks for reaching out though.

It happens a lot to people with gravel drives

Happened to me once, frightful noise. Disappeared after reversing, simply spat the stone out.

That's actually good advice. I'll be sure to remember that next time it happens. And I'm absolutely, positively certain it will.
