the A3 quattro yet again is playing up, MIL light on and after putting out comes back...not in limp mode.

my reasonable generic scanner gets this which I have no reason to doubt but being better with 40 plus year old cars I wanted to check if I am looking at the correct part!!

Is this the electrical sensor on the throttle body? if it is does that entail a replacement body complete or am I able to replace just the sensor?? after checking the wiring.

The codes relates to the V157 inlet manifold flap which was always the throttle body like butterfly valve before the EGR valve but it changed to being the inlet manifold in some cases and I need to check this at work as I can’t see which is classed as the V157 with what I have at home. It PROBABLY means it needs the inlet manifold replacing and this is so common they are available aftermarket, part number 03L 129 711 E

We like to use the Febi 176636 kit WHEN they have them in stock… which they don’t! I am going to have words with them at AutoMechanica in June.

correct CBBB. and many thanks to both.
What would be electrical in the manifold itself that cant be replaced to entail a whole manifold? I am now getting confused and it is not that modern really!!
Dare I say it...my wife has run Audi for 30 years as dailys and I too for many years but for my daily switched away due to so many issues experienced with our two 2.0tdi cars. My replacements have caused a lot less problems and easier to sort when they have.
Any clarification as to this issue on the A3 much appreciated.....a law tells me it will be a complete nasty plastic manifold! with something small and electrical in it that cant be replaced.

They have a variable manifold that wears, the motor is in the picture. I need to check at work as to which part on the CBBB is the V157 as around the time yours was built they changed it from the throttle body we had all become used to.

thanks. I see now. I recall replacing the throttle body and stepper motor on my earlier 2006 A6 Tdi before it dropped the tip of a glowplug into its engine and went kaput!! The fault code is electrical and the motor I see is on three bolts....so is it possible just the motor is faulty?

It can be just the motor, you can buy both as separate parts or a kit. I have searched the SDC V157 on ETKA for your car and it shows it as being the throttle valve before the EGR valve 03L 128 063 AF. We would fit Continental/VDO or Pierburg, whichever happened to be available and at the moment it is the Pierburg 7.03703.78.0. ElsaPro shows the manifold motor as being V183, with a CBEA the manifold is V157 and the throttle J338... why only VW and God know

Crasher....it is very much appreciated you go to work and think of helping! If ever we meet up a drink on me!
Am I correct in saying this A3 has both a manifold with a motor and a throttle valve before the EGR? that looks the same as the one I did on my A6 some years ago.
I will look at the car when it is in...(wifes and out!) to check it has the valve before the EGR...I should remember, I fitted an EGR a year or so ago!
I will pop up next on A1 forum!!:D my 18 your old daughters A1 is playing up with no lights or codes! GRRR

Yes the manifold has a motor as well as a motor before the EGR valve with motor.

ta, and my code indicates the throttle valve one before EGR....I will get to it and see what happens.

VDO throttle body fitted, cleaned horrid EGR at same time. Nasty job...cant get to anything with ease!
Not sure it is cured, the MIL light has been put off again, it has test driven about 10 miles BUT I cant put out the P2015 pending code for the same issue. Erase requested but shows up again immediately.
I therefore cant do the adaption to idle position of the new unit because it says there is a stored fault code on the engine side that needs clearing first.
I have tried on my two scanners.
Time will tell if the MIL light come back on and the car plays up again, it would stay out for varying times before.

They don't need adapting.

ok thanks, will wait till the light comes on again based on the pending code P2015 for the same issue that wont clear. Not sure I have fixed anything.

MIL back on, I think you are going to tell me I need to pull it apart again and replace the inlet manifold/motor thingy?
P2015 inlet runner position.
Clear code but pending remains on until MIL lights up again after some miles then get the current fault code and the pending code.

Looking like it, why VW switched the SDC codes around I don't know.

petrolhead63
16-05-2023, 04:52 PM
ok, this code is P2015, had P2016 before...both say same issue on runner position.
So I think change the inlet manifold/motor. Not done that on one of these..prefer my old ones made of metal and no silly electrics in them!
Is it just the torx bolts on the top and lift the top or is there more to it than that?
Also having looked into this issue I understand it now, there are specially made little parts to prevent the over rotation of the flaps in the manifold when it is worn.....ever tried it?

Febi UK STILL out of stock of the kit 176636 but they have the separate parts, motor 101224 and manifold 176617 but with the TPS kit being £639 all in with a two year warranty I am not convinced the saving is worth it unless hard cash is all that matters. ELSA states

Component on intake manifold

3 -
Variable intake manifold motor -V183- with variable intake manifold position sender -G513- (engine codes CBAA, CBAB, CBBB)

3 -
Intake manifold flap motor -V157- with intake manifold flap potentiometer -G336- (engine code CBEA)

update, I decided to try a repair block/bracket. £15 bought me nicely machined block with a bracket, spare spring and two allen bolts for the one bolt needed to have a go at the motor on my manifold. The manifold by the way is a metal one! Repair blocks are available for both the plastic and metal manifolds.
It is said the motor needs to be taken of to fit but I carefully used a hooked tool to pull up the manifold actuator arm and held up whilst the other hand slipped the block in and fitted it with the bracket.
After nipping it tight I released the arm. The block prevents it over closing due to worn plastic rubbish bits!
After clearing the code and a drive the MIL stayed off and better still the permanent pending code for the fault that could not be cleared did not re-appear.
I will report if it causes any issue but looking at what wears I think it may be a good result!
The bracket that holds the machined block is held under one of the three torx actuator motor fitting bolts...the only issue being I had to slightly file the hole larger because it was just a little tight and I had only one hand to fit it and use tools....the other holding the actuator arm up with the hooked tool :biglaugh:.
Took me 30 minutes, reckon I could do it in half that now I know.
