I had the car battery disconnected for a few days and once reconnected both key fobs stopped working.
The manual says to just manually open the car with the key, put in ignition and start car and it should just re-pair. This does not work.
I also tried many combinations I've read online of using one key in ignition and another in door, lock door, and holding lock button for 5 secs and then unlocking door and removing all. Also doesn't work in my case.
I'm at my wits end. I've tried quite a few different variations of this.

Anyone have any other suggestions for an early 2004 MK5 2.0 GT BKD?
I unfortunately don't have access to VCDS.

I very much think this is unrelated but will mention anyway, the reason I had the battery out was because I was replacing the steering lock which failed and prevented me moving the key into a position to remove the barrel (or start the car for that matter).
I had to Dremel the damn steering lock open to remove the key barrel and then replaced the ignition switch and steering lock with a cheap piece of junk off eBay (all I could get in time to prevent a parking ticket).
Since then both fobs won't work. Car does lock and unlock fine using key manually or with button on inside of door.

It is not unknown for the inconvenience unit to lose the remote matching when the battery is disconnected but usually pressing a button with the ignition on brings it back. If not it will need properly rematching.

Thanks. Suspected as much. I guess I'm going to have to find someone with VCDS in SW London. Looked at RossTech dongles on eBay and just can't justify it. It's a 20 year old car which from August will have to not only pay congestion charges but also ULEZ every time I leave my home. Time to bin it.
Thanks again for replying.

Yet my 22 year old Octavia VRS is ULEZ compliant, EU 4 petrol.
