Coding in a new battery

Would somebody be able to point me in the right direction (tried a search but couldn't find), please? I need a new battery for my A6 C6 (2L TDI), and remember about it needed to be coded in? Is that possible with VAG cable? Any instructions would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks!

on the C6 some BCMs do and some dont. i see you have a face lift so gonna take a stab in the dark and say you do.
VAG com will do it - did you try the ross tech website?
but i am also going to say as long as you replace like for like you will get away without coding, the BCM will learn the new battery -
think about winter driving vs summer driving different demands on charging.

All the coding does is tell the Battery Monitoring Unit the battery has been replaced so that its learnt values are erased so it does not overcharge the new part. When fitting a Varta (all we will fit) we find the serial is one digit too long but as long as the brand code and size are correct, all you need to do is chnage the serial by one digit or however much of the serial you can enter.

Many thanks for the help. Do you find Varta to be a great alternative to what Audi sells for a fortune, or it's more about the system recognizing it well? I was looking at Varta, but a Bentley mechanic mentioned to me that they are super happy with Exide batteries (bit dearer than Varta or Bosch).. Tx

All modern batteries are ****, especially AGM types. Exide are fine, we are happy with Varta but even one of their 096 AGM's fell over and died within a month on our loan car Passat. The worst by far in our experience is Yuasa with the 5000 series EPB version being awarded a Gold medal for failure as EVERY single one we fitted failed as did their replacements.

Many thanks for the replies! Had a look, but for me the '61 - Battery regulator' panel doesn't show up when I connect the VAG Com, so this should mean that it is not designed with coding in? Many thanks

To illustrate my opinion of modern batteries, I changed one on a 2007 Golf 5 yesterday, it was the factory fitted original and was just starting to get a little sluggish... 16 years old!

That's very helpful, many thanks! I'll try this 19 CAN gateway, as I don't have the 61 (5F, 62, 6D is the order). On a separate note, may I ask if there is a way to reset the rear wiper? It got wet somehow inside, which was probably what giving a hard time to my old battery (13 year old) - did open the lid cover inside, dried things, and battery is now happy (also being warmer now in our area) but the wiper still has it's own mind - starts on its own, stops, in the wrong position, etc..

Many thanks for the help. Finally managed to get to replacing the battery, which seems to operate OK (few error messages popped up (tyre monitoring, ABS), but seems I got over those now. However, the coding in didn't work out at all.. I have found the long code under CAN 19, channel 4, but when I put in the new long code, hit test, it just displays the old code, and the save button doesn't light up. The battery is a I1 from Varta, same size as the one that was in there - BEM code sticker on it says: 8K0915105F MLA1809088QS9, which is not exactly what VDCS showed: 8K0915105F MLA 080908QS9F.

I have tried to enter 1J091505AK VA0 6987119587, but no luck.. Tried also with the 610402092 number, and different parts of the EAN number (this should be the serial number, right?)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. While the car seem to operate OK, I do have weird errors popping up in the scan that keep returning even after clearing them.

my old A6 was a BCM on the rear panel and i was never able to code it - i assumed it was the non code one - bit late now car is gone.
I didn't change the battery but had to get a new BCM ( corrosion on the contacts due to a leaky rear bumper seal), the ebay guy I got it off said it didn't need programed when i contacted him!!

I never knew new batteries had to be coded:confused:. I fitted my Varta Battery about 3 years ago without doing any such coding.

The battery monitoring unit adjusts the alternator output as the battery ages so unless told a new battery has been fitted, it can overcharge a new one.
