Hi all,

Got this 2008 Golf MK5 1.4TSI BLG off Copart as a daily driver, 1 owner from new, full service history. I thought i'd won the lottery, didn't know what i was in for until i had a proper look this weekend. The crankshaft pulley bolt was loose (almost falling out) so i decided to scan it with my Carly app and it came up with P0343 and a host of others. So i suspected it had jumped timing and possibly smacked valve against piston.

My fears were confirmed when had the time this weekend to have a look, haven't actually taken the head off but had a borescope and recorded videos of the 4 pistons. Cant seem to figure out how to embed the videos, so here is a picture of piston 4

I am definitely not getting rid of it, i'll have to rebuild the engine, and i'm open to ideas and advice on how to proceed.

Found Engine Rebuild Kit & Valves For VW AUDI 1.4 TSI CAVD CTHD BLG BMY SKODA EA111 | eBay (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265564815121?hash=item3dd4e57f11:g:gsoAAOSwP9ZiFz7 f) on ebay wondering what people think.

Looking forward to your responses.

Cheers

At the beginning of lockdown I was left lumbered with a CAVD engined Scirocco (the CAVD is the same as the BLG) when everyone else went off on a 3 month paid holiday... ohh sorry, they went on furlough. It had come in because of the usual broken piston and the workshop had fitted new ones and along with a full head rebuild, timing chain set and oil pump but when started it sounded like a barrel of bolts... I was left to pick up the pieces whilst they were on holiday, sorry furlough, and I stripped it down to a bare block which was acid dipped and skimmed and then rebuilt it with a brand new head, cam carrier, genuine pump etc etc with every part micrometre and Plastigauge checked and it STILL sounded awful; I gave in a fitted a genuine exchange engine.

I'm currently torn between buying a reconditioned engine and rebuilding this one, but I've been reading that the internals have been superceeded by better made stuff, and also, it's better to run the BLG engine on Shell Super (99 Ron) instead of the cheap supermarket stuff. Is that true?

The BLG must be run on 98RON (so 99RON here), 95RON should only be used in "exceptional circumstances" on the later CAVD using 95RON blows pistons regularly. This information is shown inside the fuel flap but not very clearly,97RON from BP and others should be OK but not with a remap. The only recon I would fit is genuine VW but that is £5k.

I guess that’s part of the problem on this car, as it’s only done 76480 miles.

Any thoughts on the rebuild kit I posted?

Hi mate,

did you manage to rebuild your BLG engine ? If so - how did the test trial go ?

rebuild a few BMY (140HP) engines - they are a bit tricky to do, but fun when they work :)

A CAVD nearly broke me during lock down , I gave up and fitted a genuine unit.
