A8 - Ignition Problem

Hello, bit of a long one sorry,

friends car, she was driving it and red key came up on dash with "ignition failure" popping up on the intruments.

When she got home she couldn't turn it off, the key got released but the engine kept running.

Central locking dead, ignition would pop MMI screen up, nothing more.

If you clear all the faults it eventually comes to life after a long wait.

Took it for a drive and it came up with the red key and the igition failure warning, turned around and the intruments actually went through a hard reset, as i pulled in the driveway they actually went completly off. I parked up and low and behold it wouldnt switch off, i left it idling and eventually after 20 mins it switched its self off.

I've had a look and i found that the battery protection solonoid thing in the boot had failed in the open position so the battery wasn't charging, so i got a replacement and now once you've cleared all the faults it charges the battery again and lets you start it.

I had my laptop hooked up at the time of the test drive and this is what i got from it:

I have read that it could be the module in the steering collumn, apparently it has it has some additional relays/switches which fail over time and cause the symptoms i am seeing, like as i said, if i charge the battery back to full and reset all the codes, sometimes using key in the drivers door lock and locking and unlocking it several tiems it will come back to life as if nothing is wrong, a fault scan shows nothing with immolbilser/entry auth etc, the obvious aircon and radiator fan issues remain.

Before i start ripping the steering collumn out, does this ring any bells with anyone?

A couple of points, it looks like the HVAC and Connivence units are out of another car and not matched. All those comms errors suggest water Ingres to the CAN BUS unit. Personally if I was doing that I would clear all the codes and then deal with whatever comes back by using ODIS in guided fault finding, it would save a lot of time.

Could well be water, I haven’t noticed the steering wheel lock doing anything which is what lead me to learning about this secure unit on the end of the steering collum which controls terminal 15 and the rest of the ignition stuff. It has so much electrical stuff that just hammers the battery so I’m constantly fighting low voltage and what ever the actual fault is even with my trickle charger on.

So yeah where’s the canbus box, can have a look at that before I take steering column out.

The reason i say i also think its the steering wheel module is that when it works and connects most of the codes clears apart from a few which have nothing to do with this issue, so if the relay in the steering wheel box thing is going faulty it makes sense that the boxes that use terminal 15 etc sporadically can't communicate with everything else.

The steering module address 16 is not showing any errors but it has been revised to the A version

Yeah so I dropped the steering column out and there’s nothing on it just the electronic lock.

Put it all back together and it fires straight up, as soon as you try to turn it off, the interior lights come on, the screen pops down, the clocks go off but the engine keeps running, so it’s a stuck relay somewhere keeping one of the terminals on.

Think it’s a seats out job, start and auth box is under drivers seat, will see if it looks moist. Keyless “Kesey” box is under passenger seat which I know is wet but not sure if this car has keyless so might be red herring.

So ive had drivers seat out, its got puddles but the control unit was dry inside when i took it apart (start and auth), had some more messing with it, so if i take battery connection off and put it back on, car behaves normally. I put key in and the steering lock shoots off, i turn key anti clockwise and lock shoots off ,i can repeat this many times and the steering lock shoots on and off perfectly so can rule that one out.

So if i turn the ignition to the on position everything powers on, everything works, if you then turn it to the off position you have the same issue, it only half switches off, the steering lock does nothing and it doesn't complete the shutdown procedure. You then can't do anything with the car, key fobs stop working everything locks out until you disconnect battery and reconnect and car works perfectly again.

Im running out of ideas, im going to pop passenger seat out just incase theres anything there as i know its very wet but the fact when you reset the car everything works perfectly im dubious. It's like something sticking on when the ignition requests shutdown, terminal 15 i think it is is staying on by a back feed or a stuck solanoid in something but im running out of ideas.

This is the kissy? Unit that sits under near side seat. Both footwells were soaking. The start and auth box under off side is better sealed and survived.

This unit had water in it and corroded components. I carefully used contact cleaner and a detailing brush and cleaned the board, plugged it back in and problem was resolved!

What a faff. Now to dry the carpets and put it all together !

AND stop the leak. That unit is the Control unit for access and start authorisation AKA immobiliser and is superseded by 4E0 907 181 A

Trying to find the drains under the skuttle is proving hard. It’s full of crap so no doubt the sauce but trying to find where the actual drain is not as straight forward!

The drain is for the air box, it is down in that hole underneath the solenoid valves and evil to get at. If you rock the car, sometimes you can hear water sloshing around inside the box.

Hi, I might be reviving and old thread but hear me out please. I just got an 08 plate audi a8 3.0 tdi quattro. Lovely car to drive. 2 weeks ago I replaced the left front and rear door locks, as the old ones wouldn't unlock from the outside. After a lot of unlocking and locking it showed on the dashboard low battery charge. I plugged in my diag tool to clear the codes that come from the low charge (i had the engine running so the battery would still charge)and after clearing a lot of codes, when I tried to stop the engine, the key released from the ignition and all dashboard went dark but engine was still running. I put the key back in the ignition and turned it until eventually the engine stopped. But after that I didn't have any ignition, no steering lock. The only thing was the MMI popping out of the dashboard. I did search the forums, and found the j329 terminal relay under the dashboard was playing up. I took it apart and here is the weird thing: if I disconnect the contacts in the relay, put the key in the ignition, everything powred up as usual, but I have to keep it closed so I can start the engine. If i keep it closed (the relay) and try to stop the engine from the key, it has the same symptom: everything goes dark but engine runs. As soon as I let go of the relay, engine stops. I did get from the scrappers 3 other 370 relays, but as soon as I plug then in, the stop lights light up as if the brake is pressed and the key in the ignition does nothing. Today i received a brand new 70 amp bosch relay, plugged it in and it did improve it but partially. Basically I can start it now but sometimes it stops the engine, sometimes it doesn't and when it does that if I tap my finger on the relay the engine stops.

My thoughts were at first a sticky relay but a brand new one shouldn't do that. So I am thinking it might be one of the positive wires that come from the ignition switch that is giving the relay more voltage than it needs? Help !

Ps: I don't have the dreaded 0288 error code. When i scanned it with ignition off it showed 00576 on the immo module, and also the kessy module I took it apart and it was bone dry on mine.

Charge the battery but probably replace it, those systems are very sensitive to low voltages. I think the new one will need coding in.

The battery is brand new, even then I have put it on charger, and still it has the same symptoms. I might think, because I bought it like that, that the previous owner bought the new HB battery and replaced it himself. I don't think he coded it though. I didn't know you need to code it, and unfortunately my scan tool is multi brand and doesn't have that option. Is that an option in VCDS?

Yes, but it’s not going to cause you the problems you are having. It’s to do with charging capacity and age so it knows how to charge it accordingly.

If the screen is going down every time you turn the key off the ignition switch is working. My money is one of the central electric modules under passenger carpet

The passenger seat is still not bolted back in. What I have found under the passenger carpet was the bluetooth module in front of the seat, and i think the other one is the kessy module under the seat. I do have 2 plastic covers with a bunch of wires that goes under them so I'll have a look tomorrow to see what those are. Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the ignition? I think one of the positive wires that goes to the relay receive more power that in needs, or maybe a loose ground.

If I use the old dismantled relay, and use it as I the car should use it, opening and closing it, every module works fine, thats why I thing the j329 relay wiring is at fault.
