View Full Version : Become the Primary User

So we trotted to the dealer today and asked how to set up We Connect and how to become the Primary user.
They did not have a clue. We showed them how the only user profile was "Guest" and pointed out you can't configure the Privacy Settings for Guest. It seems to default back to max privacy every time you turn off the ignition which makes sense. We showed them that the Internet is not active and showed them the bit in the handbook about Privacy modes. Still none the wiser.
So I throw myself on the mercy of the forum. Can somebody publish a step by step guide of how to become the Primary User? Also how to set up the privacy settings so they stick when the ignition is turned off.
The handbook is not that helpful. We don't mind having an online account if we need it but we don't want data plans or any other item that adds to the running costs.
We are UK based.
Thanks in advance.

You need to register using the online we connect portal. Once done you can then login to the car. Dealer must know how to do this it is part of their training! Additional drivers can also be added via the portal so they can have their own settings configured in the car

Now login to the the car... Once you've done that and entered the S Pin, you can click the option to become primary user. You will need both keys and be somewhere where the car has mobile signal (ie the globe is not greyed out)

We don't have an S-pin. We set the VW ID up on a PC not via the app. The handbook seems to suggest the S pin is required if you set the app up on your phone and if you want to use security features. I know at least one user who has fallen foul of getting this wrong and now has to enter his pin on the infotainment before he can start the car!

The s pin is part of your vw id. You need it to do anything that needs elevated security... Like purchase things from the online shop or become primary user AFAIK.... I know i struggled to reset the damned thing after i forgot what I'd typed!

Mods feel free to move this post.
Here is how to set up We Connect if you don't wish to use the App. (This will only be of use to older folk I suspect.)
First you must create a VW ID.
On your PC go to:
https://identity.vwgroup.io/signin-service/v1/signin/a827267f-6cc8-4b02-a178-3205b06a6210@apps_vw-dilab_com?relayState=31ab18ac74ec45e74e92473b86f63 69f814f20ef
This is the WV main portal. (You can use the country specific one but if you do that you rely on an extra link for the VW Servers in your country to connect with the main VW Servers.)
Once you have created your VW ID then
confirm your e-mail address
add your profile data
add your vehicle to your VW ID profile (You'll need the VIN for this)
Now find both of your keys and your mobile phone. Drive to a place where you have a strong mobile signal and park the car in a safe spot.
Turn on the ignition
Swipe down from the top of the infotainment screen
Change the privacy setting to show my location (little man with a pin)
Wait until the little globe goes from Grey to White - important as you need the car to be connected to the VW servers.
Under "Users" on the main menu you'll see "Guest" next to this you'll see a + (plus button). Press this.
You'll be taken to a screen to add yourself. Log in using the VW ID you created above.
You'll be stepped through a few screens including asking you to confirm your name, and country.
There is a choice about marketing info as well (it's not obvious but you don't have to tick accept for this)
You do have to tick accept the terms and conditions.
You do have to set an S-pin.
You will also have to confirm your "order" with a cost of 0 Euro
You will need to blip unlock on key one and then blip unlock on key two to prove you are the rightful owner.
Now you will probably be asked again if you wish to be primary user, just confirm this.
Two Tips
If you have already done any customisation then don't press "change settings" or the car will go back to factory defaults.
Note: The order of the above steps is not consistent.
Now start the car and drive about for a bit.
Check any customisation to make sure they have not changed.
You'll get a bunch of messages on the Infotainment screen (the little blue message counter will show the number) these just tell you certain services are now "enabled". and can be "accepted" when you read them. They will then disappear.
More Tips
The next time you start the car you might be asked for the s-pin If you are you'll see a box you can tick called "remember". If you tick this you won't be asked again in normal use for the s-pin.
The car might have forgotten you are the Primary User. You can tell as it won't put up a personal Hello message and will probably go into max privacy. Just go into Users and select primary user again.
The reason the settings sometimes revert to default (Guest User) is if the car can't properly communicate with the VW servers as you stop and lock it up. This can happen if there is not enough phone signal, for example parking in a garage. It can also happen if the server is very busy or is down.
If you've done this without an App you'll get an e-mail telling you all sorts of stuff is turned off. Don't worry it's just all the stuff you can do on the App (like beep the horn etc). If you subsequently set-up the App then you can re-enable all this stuff.

Yes all of that is correct. It's a total ball ache and even with those instructions it can go wrong for no clear reason.

I have tried everything. I have a September 2022 VW T-Roc Cabrio R Line and followed every instruction from VW including using the VW App as I am told We Connect is no longer used !. I have a VW ID and have activated the online using my PC and been told to go to the car and activate the keys. I check that the privacy is set to the far right ( least Privacy) setting and that the car is a few feet from my WiFi modem and logged in to a 100meg a second fibre connection. The globs is white and the Emergency light in the mirror area is green. All OK and ready to go ..... the process loads I activate 2 keys and it says " key already registered, try another key " *** ! I bought the car under a month ago with 2500 miles on the clock. Has the dealer screwed me ? Any advice ?

Suggest you do a full factory reset of the car, delete all existing users and remove the car from the myvolkswagen app and start the whole process from scratch. Take your time and follow the on screen instructions very carefully. You should be using the car's inbuilt sim for the data connection not an external wifi connection. Hopefully this will get it sorted for you.

It is said by VW that I have to book it in because the car needs a software update and other toying by their guys. Seems it is a rapid response interaction .... 4 June 2024 ! :) Might have thought when you pay what was the price of a house when I was a lad , that the VW Dealer that sold it to you might have sorted these things first ! Thanks Heritage Bristol and for not bothering to answer mails.

Have to say that with both Golf 8s I bought and also the Audi A6s I have had, the whole process of setting up the primary user etc has been done as part of the handover. They were all new cars but that should not make a difference.

Oh it gets better. The car only had 2500 miles on in and was 18 months old. I asked for a print out of the service record and it showed the initial service and a MPC in March 2024 . I said the car display shows a service in 154 days , yet VW Approved Used says any service due in 6 months of purchase is done for you . As 154 days is less than 6 months could you do a service. They said the MPC was done in March , and I replied that is a multi point check and not a service plus the car service data was not updated nor was VWs computer record. So are you failing to keep records or trying to pull the wool over my eyes ?

You need to follow the instructions that I wrote. You must connect using the car's e-sim.
Up to date software also a must.
If this is a VW dealer report them to VW - very shoddy service!
