Hi , I am looking to replace the rear brake discs/pas on my A3 1.6tdi 8V car 2013/63 plate- I saw some videos which seemed to imply that I am required to run VCDS software to get the electric brake motor into a known default calibrated position by selecting Parking Brake (#53 (https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=53) ) from VCDS module list - I have tried my original version of VCDS ( 17.1 ) and latest 213 , however both versions fail to communicate with a CAN controller at address #53 (https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=53) - the installed list of modules does not mention 53 as an installed option - so my questions are :-
1) Are all electric parking brakes controlled by a CAN controller OR do some car models have a more basic implementation ?
2) If my car has a basic parking brake - does this mean that all I need to do is disengage the electric handbrake and then proceed to change the disc/pads + rewinding the hydraulic piston ?
3) Given that I have seen warnings that incorrect repairs may cause more damage - I may have to submit it to a garage to repair :(
4) Any other reasons why my ross-tech VCDS software fails to talk to #53 (https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=53) ?

Maybe requested help too soon :) - Just saw information which says that need to go through ABS module to reset the electronic handbrake - will check this out tomorrow and hopefully all will be well with the world :)

What a difference the right information gives you - Using ABS module on VCDS managed to complete replacement of rear pads/disc.
