Did you do anything to accomplish this. Or did they just appear. From memory... I am getting an ‘out of memory’ type message when I attempt to turn on the google earth maps.

I saw someone else’s post. It went to the nav and just turned on Google maps in the settings, as I had them turned off when it stopped working. All working fine

Hi ,

Saw someone else’s post , went out to try it with sim in the dash(have iPhone so no data streaming), all ok working fine.

my traffic licence expired in January , checked this as well and it hasn’t been renewed.

Looks like GE has been reinstated.

Mine too, and online traffic is back, and Audi Connect (not that I ever used that)

Thanks OP :-)

This is good news. I had called Audi this morning about this, and gave them a piece of my mind that a feature that had been part of my buying decision on the car (not really, but they don know that) had been taken away after they have had my money. They said my 2017 car couldn't be updated to the new system. Do you know if the dynamic routing is also working?

Are we now saying that there has been a change at Audi with respect to the licence still effectively being free, just ask for it to be renewed each year with no fee. That online traffic will work as long as you have a valid licence for the Audi system and if you choose to use Google maps that will work with or without a valid licence. ???

checked mine and now working.

Google works without the license. Connect services are via the license, but I am not sure if the dynamic routing is part of google or Connect

What is odd is that I spoke with Audi this morning and they didnt say anything about it working again, they just blamed Google for withdrawing the service.

edit - Google needs a license to update the maps, which after a period of time get wiped without a license.

Thanks for that. Strange they say Google stoped it, as basically all you are doing is connecting a device to Google maps as you would with say a phone or tablet.

I thought it was that it was using a certain protocol to access and that was no longer supported by google so couldn’t work. Does seem odd its back again.

They were at pains to suggest it was Googles decision. I wonder if there was a commercial disagreement between Google and Audi, so Google turned the system off, and now they have settled, so turned it back on.

My connect license runs until June. At that point the google maps and traffic wont update. They extending it for free last year, but I'm not paying £11 pcm for limited functionality that my phone does for free.

Not into the subscription method of buying cars or features, I like to pay once, then thats it.

Also now working for me .. but the Google Earth maps are stupidly out-of-date .... just look at M4 J16 .... that work finished two years ago .. and they still show the "old" road layout. If I was paying for this I would expect it to be updated within a few months ... not years !!

The satellite view is just a backdrop to the maps. The actual navigation maps are separate and are stored on the HDD inside the 5F multimedia unit - they get overlaid on the satellite view when you enable it. You can get these updated by the dealer, but it's pricey.

MF. Hi do you know the size of the Google map file and do you have to download via the cars sim or can it be done via SD card as you can with the Audi maps. Also if by SD where do you get the files from. Thanks

The satellite view is made up of multiple parts for different areas and the car downloads them as required using the sim connection. They then get cached on the hard drive of the car meaning they will continue to show if the car's connection goes offline for a time, but if you're travelling and need a new part for the area you are moving into, this obviously can't then happen. There is no option I'm aware of that allows you to add the satellite view backdrops manually, and even if you could it would likely be far too much data for the car's cache storage to handle.

Cheers!

MF. Thanks for that. So it is streaming as you drive and storing for later use If you cover that area in the future thereby building a data base over time.

It depends on how far you travel. The cache has a limited size, so if you visit an area and leave, the data for that area eventually gets overwritten.
