Key - need some good advice

Hi Folks,

I have a 2008 VW Golf Estate 1.9tdi and my daughter has a 2012 VW Polo 1.2tdi both cars come with only 1 key!!!
I am looking to get a remote spare key for both vehicles, what is my best options?
What do VW charge?
Am I better to go to an auto locksmith?
or can I buy a remote key (with circuit board) of eBay and get it cut? Then can I program it myself?
are all VW keys 434 hz?

any advice very welcome.

VW will be pricey! Auto electrician might be the cheaper option. Not sure if you can reprogramme keys with VCDS....

But I’m not sure about the immobiliser part of the key....if it’s not matched to the car / cluster it won’t turn on.

Normally cars come with 2 keys so clearly they’ve gone missing....

I take it one of these keys cut and programmed are no good?

The key is actually three separate functional components, the metal blade, the radio remote control and a inductively activated rolling code immobiliser chip. From VW you can order a full new key cut to the information held according to its VIN and this works as long as the car is original. This will operate the locks and nothing else. The remote control then has to be added to the central convivence system and this can be done using systems such as registered VCDS. The immobilser however is a different matter, the new chip in the key has to be added to the immobilser which is in the instrument panel and this requires security access to the unit which USED to be done using a one time only 7 digit "SKC" which was entered along with other date such as date and dealer number, this system has now been superseded and the programing is done on line to the VAG server in Germany and the operator sees nothing, you must have the VAG system ODIS with GEKO security access to do do this and some VAG independent specialists like myself have this access. There are other ways such as extracting the dash PIN and entering the data using other software and these are available from key specialists. A new key/chip section for a 2008 Touran from VW is £101.35 including VAT and comes cut to the cars VIN, the remote control is £104.38 and is not VIN specific.

If you live in the north east I’d recommend Newcastle car keys. A few years ago my dad took my only car keys with him on holiday by accident, Newcastle car keys drove to me in Teesside and cut me a new key for just over £100. It was just as good as the original and you couldn’t tell the difference. I’m guessing it would be cheaper if you have the original key.
