Hi

New member, wondered if anyone can help.

My Mum has a 2006 Golf 1.6 FSi Auto, which has only done about 25,000 miles.

it was fine when she went shopping, however 2 days later the ESP light has come on and will not switch off.

I have read various things on the internet from bulbs to brake pads to complete new system at around £1500 :aargh4:

I was wondering, if there is anything I can check easily and what should I look for.

Many Thanks

PT

Hi pt55 welcome to the forum,

ESP light can mean lots of different things and not easily checked without diagnostic equipment.

You need to get the car scanned for fault codes via the OBD (on board diagnostics) port....

Most garages have these but you may wish to go to specialist or VAG / VW independent garage for the best help at a good price. It may get expensive if you go to the VW dealerships.

Some examples of diagnostic systems are:

VCDS / VAG COM (aftermarket)
ODIS (dealership system)

AVOID the cheap scanners on auction sites which are useless!

Does the vehicle drive correctly? Is it underpowered due to being in limp home mode?

First port of call is fault scan so the issue can be narrowed down and then you can focus on those fault codes to detect if there is defective part, wiring, module etc......

This WAS a common problem on the Golf 5 and was a problem with a pressure sensor called G210 so the first step must be a code read by a garage with VAG specific diagnostic equipment to see what is stored in the ABS ECU.
