View Full Version : Golf Mk8 - Power Fold Mirrors Retrofit

Despite power fold exterior mirrors being fairly common on many new cars, VW decided not to fit them to some models of the Mk8. They’re not fitted as standard on the Life or R-Line, and were only standard on Style models delivered from around September 2020 onwards. Curious, - these are not cheap cars.

If any owners of manual-fold Mk8s want to upgrade to power fold, a retrofit service is now available. Not sure if I’m allowed to post a link on here, but you’ll find it by entering ‘Volkswagen Golf 8 (CD) Folding Mirrors Retrofit’ into a search engine.

£1,050 fitted using genuine VW parts, including a new switch in the driver’s armrest. It might cost an additional £300 if the door control modules on your particular model need upgraded.

Workshop is in Dorset which is a bit far for me, but just wondering if anyone else is interested? Or if anyone does this in Northern Ireland?

Handy to know, I bought mine in October and no power folding mirrors!

I guess it must include Side Assist as well as per the factory option (£550), however I would be very cautious about a retrofit of a safety system by anyone other than manufaturer and even then I would not be too keen. Many years ago a friend bought one of the first jaguar S-Type's his wife didn't feel that having Sat Nav was safe, too many distractions, so the dealer agreed to remove it from the one they had in stock. Suffice to say that after 18 months of ever increasing electrical issues, makes the problems we have with the Mk8 look like a blown number plate bulb by comparison, and the car going back to the Jaguar factory on more than one occassion, Jag admitted defeat and replaced the car with a brand new XJ at no extra cost. Now of course we can't be certain if those problems would have still been there if the sat nav had not been removed, but I do feel that doing anything significant to the car should be done with fallback of the manufacture if things go wrong

I have ordered the Style in October so it will come with Side assist. But i don't know if it comes with the rear traffic alert. Can anyone that has the standard Side assist verify it. Thanks

What's rear traffic alert? Surely that's a rear view mirror?

Reading the Price List on the VW site, only the GTD/GTI/GTE versions get rear traffic alert and it does not even as an option on other models so assume the answer is no

I've actually spoken with the guy from the company regarding this retrofit, the retrofit does not include Side assist.

Kufatec will sell you what is required for €550 https://www.kufatec.com/en/volkswagen/vw-golf/golf-8-cd/complete-set-folding-exterior-mirrors-for-vw-golf-8-cd-45010. I think by reading it you use the mittor glass and mirror caps on your current car. It also seems to suggest that in addition to using the supplied coding dongle you need to get some additional programming done. But all in all a lot less than £1000 if you are a reasonably competitient DIYer

Has anyone asked VW retrofit?

Yes, They said they're not doing it yet but to check back at a future date.
To make the required software change they need certain VW credentials as the car has to be connected to VW servers whilst the modification is happening, I imagine VW are quite selective with those connection details and that it takes time to get them.

Really disappointing with the mirrors and a few other aspects….
