Just saw this in youtube, broken wires causing the MMI display to be blank:

I have similar issue but don't believe it is the same; mine blanks also top line and centre part in the FIS, between the speed/rev dials. MMI Recovers by pressing close/open button in the dash, FIS remains blank until next ignition cycle.
Annoying but difficult to fix as probably is caused by SW.
