Hi All

My 1.5eTSI STLYE was delivered yesterday. I have spent several hours updating and familiarising myself with the new interface and think I might be at a point where I can live with the car for the next 35 months!

On the plus side my car arrived with power folding mirrors, side assist/ blind spot and the illuminated front grill strip.
Appears though, after a trip to my local dealer today to help with a few questions, that the ability to display the navigation maps in the instrument cluster has been removed from the style in standard spec. The 'genius8' who I dealt with had his ipad out and showed amendments to the spec confirming the change. I can live with the swap if I'm honest, but was just on the look out for the update/ document he showed me. Do VW issue press release updates of build spec changes? FWIW, my car also arrived with a spare wheel which I hadn't specced.

Other than that all is 'good' with the car, now has 91 miles under it! I think my wife's mk7.5 and my previous 2015 mk7 gti pp were instinctively easier cars to get in and drive, but I'm sure this new mk8 with its additional safety kit, comfy seats, slicker dsg and fatter steering wheel will serve me well. The touch screen everything is a ballache, but once set up, I doubt I'll need to meddle much with it.

Picked up my 1.5 eTSI a few weeks ago. Was expecting the maps to work in both screens as well but updated in the official brouchure on the VW website back in July. Says the digital cockpit pro cannot display maps on it in small print in the spec page. Only downside of not getting the Discover Pro version i would say, other than that really good car.

Cheers for the reply. I didn't look at the spec/website much at the time. Just needed to order a replacement lease and though, 'another golf'. Opted for mid spec Style as it had LED headlights. The rest has been a bonus.
Think I'll like the car once all the new touch screen tech becomes the 'norm' to me.

I'd say the style is top spec at the minute. I think with the 8 they've screwed the R line over. Fewer gadgets in exchange for sports seats and fake tailpipes. Love the R line but style was a no brainer.

Led headlights are amazing!!

That’s why I didn’t get the R-line, thought what’s the point when you don’t even get standard stuff in the style like 3-zone climate and even Led lights which is a £700 option. I got the IQ lights on the style for £800, couldn’t imagine the £1700 for them on the r-line.

Presumably they needed to do this in order to justify the high price for the Discover Pro option, which otherwise was giving little compared to what was provided as standard. No doubt it will not be long before someone works out how to enable it :o

Even simple things like keeping welcome home lights on for longer

To my mind, there are a few drawbacks to displaying the nav maps on the virtual instrument cluster instead of on the infotainment screen. The instrument cluster map doesn't give you the same advance turn information as the infotainment screen, simply the name of the next road; you don't see the strip map with advance info on fuel / coffee stops and traffic congestion; and, when the map is displayed on the instrument cluster, the two outer dials are simple rectangles, unattractive compared to the standard view where the round dials show speed / revs as well as the selected info in the centre.

I think I'd much rather have the power fold mirrors!

Folding mirrors!!! Mine didnt come with them :-( Ive done about 250 miles in mine, the only niggle is the front assist when its raining hard, gets its knickers in a twist for the odd second or two.
Personally I dont like the map right in front of me, quite distracting.
I did hope Id have heated seats, all the wires are there but no interface.
Then again VW is like all car makers, its the add ons that make them the extra cash.
Over all I am pretty please with mine, much better than the T-ROC

I fell foul of this too, managed to get an 'in stock' car very close to my desired spec in July and found it did not come with the foldable mirrors nor did the 'winter pack' come with the heated steering wheel. The dealer tried to convince me I had the better deal having the 'Pro' navigation which includes the useless gesture controls. Did not realise maps in the instrument cluster was part of that, but having the head-up display I find I don't use it anyway, it's also quite ugly to be honest so you haven't missed much!

Agree with you about the Head Up Display. Great info - exactly where you need it. It shows speed limit, actual speed, cruise control desired speed, road warning signs, and next turn information from the satNav.
Well worth the money.

On the MY21 it doesn't. Honestly illuminated grille and folding mirrors are way better than the map on nav screen!

This kind of answers my issue of not being able to have the map in cockpit. However what I don’t understand is what is the difference between the standard and pro nav? Features of the pro include gesture control and internet streaming radio which mine does have, I just do t get the navigation screen when cycle through the screens using the view button. Also I was told by VW in July and have seen it in various motoring articles that the 2020 mk 8 would get the pro as standard.

Is there any way to check which version I have? As it seems like I have a half way house between standard and pro!!

Many thanks

When VW switched to 2021 models in August, they diverged the models into Discover media and discover pro. You should see on the brochure on the VW website it states in small text on one of the pages at the bottom, (1 Please note: The navigation map cannot be displayed on the Digital Cockpit Pro.)

MAPs on info display not supported on media. Pro has more voice command functions than the media as well.

If you didn't specify in your order about the discover pro, depending on when you ordered you will only have the standard discover media system

Many thanks for the update. We ordered in August so I suppose the time frame fits. What I find strange is the lack of definite info over the differences between the standard and pro. So to confirm you get gesture control with the standard? As everywhere I have read it states this is a feature of the pro. Internet streaming was also meant to be a feature of the pro as well but I can have Alexa and also have tested the internet radio feature. Are the extra voice commands, the more "natural" voice command recognition, such as "My feet are cold" which then turns on the heater to feet?

At the moment I'm struggling to see the £1600 upgrade for a map in the digital cockpit to be worthwhile!

Thanks again

Yes you can get limited gesture control functions on the standard, think it’s only the move between the screens on the home page so far, not tried much else with it. But I did ask for speech function Volkswagen to turn air on on or something similar but it said that function wasn’t available so I think advanced commands are on the pro. Could do with a list from VW of what it can do voice control wise. Internet streaming is on both media and pro as far as I know, I don’t usually use it.

yes the £1600 is eye watering to fork out for, not worth it just for maps, might be a later upgrade or addition to add in the SD card for the info display. I read on one of the European forums that it’s missing a cable linking the SD to the info display so that’s why it won’t work.

Hi Guys,

I've been following the discussions on the forums here regarding the specification changes. I've just started the process of signing a new lease for a new Golf 8 Style eTSI 150 DSG, which was a stock car. After reading through the forums and seeing that MY2020 cars were missing some features from the latest brochure, I asked the retailer to confirm the build date in order to confirm if the car was a MY2021 car including the folding mirrors etc. They have confirmed today that the car was built at the end of September, so they are confident it is the MY2021 specification but they cannot confirm this as the car is currently in a warehouse (I guess at the port of entry?) and not on their site.

I've sent the initial paperwork as they could only reserve the car until lunchtime today, but I will still need to complete the VWFS paperwork before anything is final. Does anyone have any opinion / insight in to this? Am I safe to assume that the car is the MY2021 specification if it was built at the end of September?

Appreciate anyone's help in confirming this.

If the car was built in September then you should have the folding mirrors as these were added to cars built from July as the factory reopened. As to which version of the navigation system you have and whether you can display the map on the virtual cockpit is a more difficult question to answer

Provided the car was built at the end of September, then it is certainly a 2021 model year.
The first Style models to be fitted with power fold mirrors were delivered in September.

Thanks both for the replies - that sets my mind at ease then. I was surprised to read the information regarding the display of the maps in the instrument cluster - I have a mid-sped MK7.5 Golf currently and, specced with the Active Info Display, it was just a given that you were able to do this. I've used this function an awful lot less than I expected to though, so I'm not too worried about whether or not this particular car has the feature. I was more concerned about the mirrors (due to ease of garage parking), and the Side Assist which I believe is only included on the MY2021 models.

Thanks again for the help - I'll be sure to update the thread when I receive delivery in the next couple of weeks.

Just a quick update, received delivery today and can confirm that the car is a MY2021 year model, complete with the folding mirrors and Side Assist. The feature to have the map in the instrument cluster is definitely disabled, which is disappointing but expected.

On the off chance someone else has experienced this, has anyone noticed a dull but clear high-pitched 'whistle' coming from the rear underside of their car while the engine is running? Haven't done much searching yet due to poor light but there's definitely something happening that feels like it shouldn't be.

Hi CLewis does your side assist include the rear traffic alert?

Hi CLewis does your side assist include the rear traffic alert?

Hey there, yes it is included according to the driver aid list on the infotainment system.

I've noticed an annoying problem, hopefully I'm missing something but I cannot seem to find a way to control calls via the instrument cluster / steering wheel. When making a call, a red 'Cancel' button appears but once the other person answers, I cannot find any way of interacting with the call at all except via the touchscreen on the infotainment system (on previous versions of the Golf, pressing the 'OK' button on the steering wheel would hang up the call, and the other buttons would scroll through missed calls etc.). When 'telephone' is selected inside one of the dials, I just see the name of the person and 'Active' underneath.

Has anyone else noticed this / know of a way to do anything about this? It's very annoying / almost dangerous to have to hang up a call via the infotainment system, especially when using Apple CarPlay as the 'Hang up Call' button is far to the left of the screen.

Just thought I would add to the whole map in instrument cluster thing. Ordered my Golf 8 Style at the end of July based on the 25th June version of the brochure, which stated that “When the navigation map is displayed in the Digital Cockpit Pro the navigation map cannot be displayed on the Discover Navigation’s 10" touch-screen.” Car got delivered mid October and came with the Side Assist, Travel Assist, illuminated grille strip and folding mirrors etc, but there doesn’t seem to be an option put the map there. Can VW just omit certain spec elements without warning, cos I’m quite disappointed that this function is no linger applicable to the Style spec, despite buying on that basis. Plus despite not optioning the Pro version, it still has the “Hello Volkswagen” command and the gesture control, is that meant to a thing on the Media version?

Kind of need to be because those touch sensitive strips are a nightmare when you're driving

Unfortunately all manufacturers have a get out of jail free clause in their marketing material which says in the case of VW

Prices, specifications, features, technical and other information (including
fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and range) are updated regularly and are
subject to change without notice (this may include changes between order
and delivery). There may be a delay in updates to our materials – always
consult your authorised Volkswagen retailer for the latest information.

It can (and often does) work the other way too where you discover soething that was an option is now standard. Regarding the voice control, I think the standard Navigation has some voice functionality while the Pro system offers Natural Language functionaity which means you can basically say what you like and it will interpret rather than restricting yourself to fixed set of commands and phrases
