Golf TDi DPF limp mode

Hi all,

I've had the DPF light on my dash for the past week (I was meant to take it on the motorway to clear) but this morning the glow plug and engine management light also came on (glow plugs are flashing, the other 2 are solid), since these came on the car is now in limp mode.

I took it to my local garage who confirmed the error code was "regeneration duration", he tried to clear it but was unable to do so. I was recommended to get the DPF removed and cleaned which will resolve the errors at a cost of £380 plus VAT.

Is this correct and will this resolve the issues currently being experienced?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

It sounds like the garage you used only has a generic code reader, there will almost certainly be multiple fault codes with the problem you have.

Phone around & find someone who has VCDS & get it re-checked.

As it is at the moment, the car won't regen while in limp mode & the DPF will get clogged beyond being salvagable.

My advice would be to get to any road where you won't have to stop frequently for 10 mins plus and give it a good run at higher rpm even in low gear. I'd also try to get wynns (?) dpf cleaner available at tesco petrol stations if its permanently in limp mode then drive at highest rpm allowed by limp mode
Its not guaranteed to work but certainly worth a shot.

Thanks for the response, I took it on the motorway and drove it at over 60mph @2200rpm for 10-15 minutes but that didn't resolve it.

You need to get your motor scanned (preferably with VAG-COM\VCDS) for any error codes logged in the ecu and post them, that will save a lot of guessing and check systems out.

Common cause is the throttle valve on the inlet sticking or the EGR jamming open.

But VCDS really will be your best friend.

Thanks everyone, i took it to someone with VCDS and they confirmed it was the DPF. Forced regen and the car is now fine!
