Hi, I've recently bought a VW Sharan TDi auto, 2009. Being a thickie, I can't work out what oil to buy. It says in the voluminous manual 'VW 505 01' but I have no idea what that means! Go into any garage and the oil is grouped by viscosity. Can someone advise please?

It means a VAG specific specification, and is important for avoiding engine wear. Oils which meet the spec will say so in large or small print. Don't let anyone tell you that similar numbers like 505.00 are good enough. I get this 5l at a time from my local motor shop:Granville | Product Information (https://granvilleoil.com/prodInfo?pID=416).

You often won't find something suitable in the local petrol station. In Halfords your local motor parrs store, etc it wil often, but not always, be described as "modern dirsel" oil to help you find it. But be sure to check for those numbersxas some will be for BMW, Peugeot, etc spec.

Have a chat with Opie Oils or go to their web site and pop in your registration number.

As has been said, definitely make sure you get the correct oil specification. This is different from just looking at the viscosity. There are even differences between engines that on the face of it look the same. My 2008 1.9 diesel Passat is specified as VW 507.00.

For my Passat I need 5W-30.

Now, say, Comma X-Flow Type F 5W-30 Semi Synthetic Engine Oil is 5W-30 viscosity - so that bit is OK - BUT but it does NOT have the VW specification so I'd steer clear of that one.

However, some oils such as, say, Millers Oils TRIDENT Longlife 5W-30 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil cover the specification for both VW 505.01 and 507.00 so that would be fine for both of us.

Hope that helps.

Good Luck.

Andy.

Thanks guys for your replies about my oil query. I rang Halfords the other day and spoke to someone who recommended their 'No 8' oil, which was said to match the 505 spec. However, I shall go and read the blurb on the bottle before buying. Tried a search, too, which said I should use Castrol Edge. The guy in Halfords said I only needed that if I was going to be doing high mileage - straight onto the motorway type driving, otherwise it was an unnecessary expense.
Thanks again.

That's a later "design" 507.00 oil, which a lot of people seem to be happy to use in place of 505.01.

I still look for a 505.01 5W-40 oil. The only one that Halfords seme to have is this Castrol one in 1L bottles, which makes it expensive: Castrol Edge Titanium 5W40 Oil 1 Litre | Halfords UK (https://www.halfords.com/motoring/engine-oils-and-fluids/engine-oil/castrol-edge-titanium-5w40-oil-1-litre-253062.html). Click on the pictures to read the back label on their site, and spot the 505.01 :).
