I get a humming noise from one of the front wheels when I turn left at anything over 20mph or so. I'm thinking one of the bearings is worn, but unsure which one: am I right in my assumption that it's more likely to be the o/s? being as the suspension loads up on the o/s during a left turn

That seems to be the general consensus - the outside wheel in the turn gets loaded and so is more likely to highlight worn/pitted bearings/races.
I haven't tried it (yet) but I remember someone using a mechanics stethoscope to good effect (whilst spinning the wheel) to determine which bearing needed replacing.
I would also add that if you don't know the age of the bearings and suspect they are the same (eg. original) then i'd change both while you're at it. Relatively easy job on a Mk5.

If it is bad enough it will rumble when off the floor and the wheel spun.

Thanks for that fellas. I have a stethoscope somewhere so I'll dig it out and have a listen
