View Full Version : Retrofit OEM Reversing Camera to UK Model A6

Hello,

I'm about to fit the OEM reversing camera to my UK RHD A6 Avant and was wondering if anyone had experience of this?

The instructions I have from Kufatec and online show routing down the right hand side and across the glove box, which is ok for LHD models but for UK model it would either involve crossing over in the boot and down the passenger side to go behind glovebox or down the drivers side and behind the steering wheel.

Probably not a big deal either way but interested in what cable routing direction others may have taken.

Thanks in advance!

Pretty sure I fitted as per instructions as it goes to the left side fuse box. Though been a few years

Thanks for the rapid reply, the module goes in the right hand side behind the lights but in the instructions I have it routes the cable straight down that side to the head unit but behind the glove box. For a UK model that doesn’t work as would be behind the steering Wheel unless cross over in the boot first then back again.

Hope that makes sense as first question may have been a bit poorly worded

Actually that rings a bell, do two wires go to the can bus connection on the side of the dash? I think you can still pick this up from driver side UK? The part to the mmi I sent along the route of the loom round the rear seat and down passenger side. And it was tight I think I had to remove some of the loom tape to free up a couple of inches

Yes, from the kufatec loom looks like couple cables to the can bus on right hand side in boot then two to the MMI unit, will give it a measure up beforehand to get an idea of cable will reach as may be a big hope to expect it to cross over and back again unless there’s an easy cable route across the drivers side to the mmi in the front.

Still remember the scratched knuckles from getting an extension cable in so I could retrofit AMI socket into the armrest rather than the glovebox, was definitely worth it though!

Thanks for the replies!

Hi Acquell,

I also purchased a OEM Reversiing Camera Kit with the Kaufatec loom but never managed to get to the end of the process with the coding - could you please let me know if you are successful in getting it fully installed. The way you are installing is sounds similar to the way we did it about 2 years ago but we had issues with the coding of it which I never got back to sorting. It the only thing I had not sorted since I bought it :( I love the car otherwise Its an A6 Black Edition Ultra with tech pack

I may need to head back to the UK to get it sorted unless I can find someone here in Ireland that is familiar with coding them.

Cheers

Paul

Did you go down the drivers side or passenger side and across?

I’ll let you know how I get on, may be a couple weeks before I get round to it as waiting for some parts to arrive then will need a quiet afternoon but think I’ll probably do in phases.

Hey, what coding problem did you have? I did the install and got through the coding pain. Though I never got the calibration part to work, it functions perfectly without calibration.

Hi Acquell,

The wiring was down the passenger side and then across - My mechanic patiently did this over a couple of hours but he said was not too bad.

Hi DPN,

I think I may have spoke to you before - we follow all the steps - I basically got to the to the end of the instructions but ended up with the blank screen when in reverse - I definetly think we missed something in the coding somewhere but never got acround it to trying again.

Do you happen to recall the coding for it ? All I know is we spent a fair bit of time playing with it but never sorted. We did have the latest version of VCDS so we reckon we either missing something when coding or did not check something.

Just a a summary of what we did in coding :

19 CAN Gateway - I installed camera module (6C) and its visible for diagnostic equipement.
6C Camera module - I reseted all fault codes apart form Basic Settings not performed - I didn't touch anything else in it (the car has no trailer hitch fitted and but has parking sensors fitted front and back...)
9 - I changed Byte 35 Bit 4 to value 1 (before value was 0), coding was accepted and no fault codes appeared...
5F - I changed Byte 6 Bit 2 to value 1 (before it was 0), Coding was accepted, but Fault code appeared (1543 - Control Module Incorrectly Coded.............)
I ignored existance of the code and reseted the MMI pressing MENU+ROTARY KNOB+RIGHT TOP together.
Camera is still not working.

That was as far as we got.

If you have any suggestions I would be most grateful to get this resolved.

Mine didnt work to start with, i either rebooted the mmi or disconnected the camera module and reconnected, it was something simple

Some snips of my coding.
I recall there being two backup camera's in the CAN list when I did it one works and the other does not, I never got to the why.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Did you use the Blue ODB Dongle that comes with the Kufatec kit? You need that but I dont know what it actually does.

Hi DPN,

Thanks for that - will give that a go at the weekend. The only other question I have for you is when you put the car into reverse on the screen - do the guidlines appear they would have before or was this also an issue that requires the calibration piece to work.

I am going to review the steps again and also compaire the coding you have which seemed to have got you to the end. I just want the camera to work :) Whilst I have got used to reversing without it to my own detrement I ended up clipping my neighbout car! so hopefully getting it to work will prevent that happening again as I had a bill for tipping mine and his!

As for the OBD Dongle - The kit I got from the supplier in the UK only came with the Kafutec Cable and the camera - they did not supply the ODB Dongle - did you end up using that ?- I think it does some of the coding work as well as far as I know. I may need to get on Kaufetec and get it as well to get it over the line

Will come back with some updates hopefull over the weekend.

Again thank you for sharing you experience

Dean,

I may also trying coding it and rebooting / failing that I will code it and the reconnect the camera. Sometimes its the simple things that work!!!

thanks for the tip

Yes when I put it in reverse I get the dynamic guide lines that adjust when the wheel is turned. There are also some options for dynamic/static and tow-hitch lines.

With my kit from Kufatec I got this odb dongle

Perfect thanks for confirming - ok so I am just going to get my hand on the VCDS over the weekend and trying running through the coding again - hopefully we get past the black screen issue. After that If still no go will probably contact Kufatec re the OBD Dongle - look like its a about 100 euro or they appear to be doing a deal along with the cable for €170 but pretty confident the cable and the camera being recognised is ok as we could see if being recognised in the system

I really appreciate the info that you gleaned from your experience. My understading is the ODB Dongle basically is coding from an existing vehicle that has the reverse camera installed and updates the coding on the car its put into to reflect this . It basically update your car with the relevant settings so they are the same.

Will hopefully post an update over the weekend

Cheers

Paul

With some scraped knuckles I’ve managed to fit the camera with the cabling down the drivers side to avoid crossing over.

I have a very silly question as to how I would activate it now. I’ve tried the green screen per what some people do on YouTube but I don’t see the same options, I’m sure that it’s probably because I have RMC and they have something more advanced.

Does anyone have experience through RMC of coding the camera? I have odb eleven arriving soon which believe I can code through.

Thanks in advance.

Success!!! Managed to enable the camera using odb11.

Still need to calibrate but a big step forwards

Excellent! Can I ask, what Android device are you using with ODB11? I've got an old Nexus 7 tablet which doesn't want to play nicely with OBD11, it connects but then constantly drops the bluetooth connection.

Hi, I used an iPhone to do this so don't have a view on Android I'm afraid. Key steps I found different to what was/wasn't documented:

- Coding for A6 is different to what kufatec/ODB11 says, the module was 1080005 rather than 1020005
- needed to reboot the MMI between changes

Will try and calibrate it at the weekend as still showing the errors when scanning of:

- 19 - Module coded incorrectly
- 6C - module not calibrated

I'm at the moment assuming if I calibrate it may remove the error on 19 unless anyone has any ideas to the contrary?

You need that big checked board thing to calibrate dont u? I never bothered, but i have a cp issue so may send to dealer to calibrate camera and do component protection on my dab

Yes, it looks like two big dominoes for the rear camera, the front one is a bit more of a different pattern, but i think if it accepts the sheet then it's doable with some careful measurements and patience.

I have found one on the internet that can be printed out (will need to stitch about 30 A4 sheets together) to try, if it doesn't work then no big issue as the focus is ok and the steering lines don't seem too far out.

Acquell

Managed to get it to calibrate using OBDeleven, some bricks to line up wheels and a homemade calibration board (28 sheets of A4!).

Took a bit of trial and error as kept getting the calibration rejected with “marginal conditions not met” but now calibrated and very pleased so can confirm it’s definitely doable.
