I gather (from Crasher) that the oval crank pulley on these engines is not that common....does this mean that I need a different cambelt than the round-pulley motors? I've counted the teeth on the installed belt (141, same as other BKDs), but I'm wondering what difference the oval pulley makes to any other parts required - coolant pump, tensioners, idlers etc. I don't have the VIN or VRM from the donor car, just the engine.

Anyone any ideas?

The only difference is the tool used

Ok cheers Crasher. The correct tool should be here today or tomorrow.

Do you know the reason for having the oval pulley...and why it apparently wasn't common?

The 038 105 263 F pulley was only used up until mid 2006 production and the upper pulley is the same as normal but interestingly the damper behind it isn't so damper 03G 109 239 B must be used with the oval pulley. Probably they later discovered no one could tell the difference.

Interesting, thanks for that Crasher. Although (it seems to me, anyway) that the slight 'relaxation of the drive belt' would have instantly been compensated, or adjusted, for by the cambelt tensioner. I wonder if this constant repeated stress on the tensioner resulted in more breakages - either of the tensioner, or the tensioner stud? Or maybe my logic is a bit off, dunno.
